Introduction

This resourcehas beendesignedtoassistvocationaleducationandtraining(VET)practitioners andlearners toselectapplications (apps)formobiledevices thatsupport VETteachingandlearning.It highlights anumberofmobileandtabletappsfocussingonthosethatsupport:

  • thedevelopmentof foundationskills
  • learnerswithadisability.

This resourcesupports theQueenslandVETInclusiveLearningFramework(theFramework).

TheFramework setsout thewayforwardforinclusivelearninginQueenslandVET. Itwasendorsedby theHonourableJohn-PaulLangbroek,MinisterforEducation,TrainingandEmploymentinAugust2012.Developedby theQueenslandVETDevelopmentCentre(QVDC),theFrameworkis aresponsetotheNationalVETEquityAdvisoryCouncil(NVEAC)EquityBlueprint. It identifiesthreetiers ofactioninrecognitionof thesystemic,organisationalandindividualresponsibilitiesrequiredtoembedinclusivelearningandachieveimprovedoutcomesforlearnerswhoexperiencedisadvantage.TheFrameworkincludesspecificactionsforregisteredtrainingorganisations(RTOs)andteacher/trainers toembedthedevelopment ofFoundationSkillsintrainingdelivery.Underpinningthisistheneedtomakeinformationandlearningresourcesaccessibletoalllearners.

Theterm‘FoundationSkills’inthisresourcerefers totheskillsidentifiedinthe:

  • AustralianCoreSkillsFramework(ACSF)
  • CoreSkills forWork(CSW)previouslyknownas employabilityskills.

FoundationSkills areessentialforeffectiveparticipationinsociety.Theyunderpinevery VETcompetencystandard, ateveryqualificationlevelandcontributetoworkperformance.

SkillsAustralia(2010)identifiedthat improvementsinthelevel ofFoundationSkillsareessential toincreasedworkforceparticipationandsocialinclusion.As aresult,thereis asignificantnationalfocus onthedevelopmentof theseskills andassociatedsupportstrategies.

Mobiledevicesandtheirapplications(apps)

Mobiledevicesandtheirappsareasupportstrategythat canassistinthedevelopment ofFoundationSkills andenhanceaccessibility forlearners.They arealsobecominganincreasingpartof oureverydaylife.

As such, theVETsectorhasakey responsibilityintheuseof mobiledevices.Thisincludesdevelopinglearnerskills tousethetechnology,andleveragingtheopportunitiestechnologycreatestoexpandthereachandaccessibility of training,particularlytothosewhomay nothaveparticipatedinthepast.

Mobiledevicesandtheirappsareaconduitforinclusivelearning.They affordnewandexcitingmethods forexperiencinglearning, andforexperiencingtheworldaroundus. Withinthisspace,teachers andlearnerscanexploreandengage,andpotentiallyaccomplishgoals that werepreviously out of reach.

Devicesusedinthedevelopmentofthisresource

Duetothemultitudeof mobiledevicesavailableonthemarket,only asmallnumberwereselectedinthedevelopmentof thisresource.Thesewere:
