The tractor's primary use will be for secondary tillage needs in the community gardens. We need a front end loader to carry soil, mulch, soil amendments, fertilizer, compost, rocks, etc. and for garden needs. A trailer is needed to transport the tractor and implements between gardens. The installed cost of the front end loader is $3600 and the cost of a trailer is $1000. The Cherokee County Master Gardeners are willing to fund the remaining difference of $1600 to aquire this equipment.

Max of 2000 characters including spaces:

The Marble community garden was started in 2009 for Cherokee County residents to have access to good soils for a garden plot. The area used is appoximatly one half acre divided up evenly for up to 25 participants. Master Gardeners helped manage the garden and assist gardeners. All gardeners are required to donate 10% of food grown, and if any was left unharvested, the Master Gardeners would harvest and donate to food banks. A small compact tractor with a rotary tiller is needed in both gardens for secondary tillage needs and weed control. The front end loader is needed to assist in constructing raised beds, transporting compost, soil amendments, stones, soil and garden equipment. The trailer is needed to transport the equipment between the gardens.

How do you plan to create a garden that will have a long and vibrant role in the community? Max of 2000 characters including spaces

The Marble garden is going strong now starting its fourth year. Cherokee County Extension promotes and supports both gardens through local media in the form of newspapers, newsletters, blogs, websites, radio PSA's and Extension programs. Cherokee County Government supports the gardens and is encouraging more in the county on county property. Both gardens will be used for educational purposes teaching youth and adults garden principles, both integrated pest management and organic. Garden participants enjoy fresh self grown produce, saving them money along with eating healthier. Both required donations of produce and surplus produce will help feed needy famlies in Cherokee County.

Does your agency have any other community gardens? If yes, tell us about the location of these gardens, the age of the gardens and who is utilizing them.

Yes, a new garden will be planned for 2012 in the Ranger Community at the Mountain Folk Center (Western part of Cherokee County). The new Ranger garden will be managed by the Master Gardeners, but this one will be a demonstration organic garden. The Master Gardeners will be in charge of tillage, planting, weeding, trellising and harvest. Any resident or group will be invited to participate in the garden and they will receive a percentage of what is grown according to how much work they contribute. At least 10% will be donated to food banks.

Required Attachments: Send these two attachments with your application.

  1. In one document, include a visual representation of the garden: plot description, either a drawn site plan or photographs along with measurements and compass orientation (N/S/E/W).
  2. A written plan with timeline on the steps the team will take to implement their garden project
