1. How much colonized substrate (birdseed in quart jars) does one use to inncoulate 1 ft/2 of straw 4-6 inches deep?
2. What does fully colonized straw look like? Should it be completely white like coloized pf substrate/birdseed or similar to dung where some of the subtrate is showing?
3. How important is casing straw? There was an avi at the donkey before it died, showing straw without a casing layer and a substantial yield. Will adding a casing layer substantislly improve yield? Is the risk of the casing contaminating outweighed by the extra yield?

general rule is 1/2 pint per square foot of substrate

Hippie didn't case his. The casing is primarily for mositure control rather than nutrient increases.
Shot of Pf Cake ground to powder....
Mixing pf powder into pasteurized straw...
Inoculated straw after mixing....
Inoculated straw after 36 hour incubation...
Closeup of spawn run at 36 hours after inoculation...

Thanks oldtimer - a pic is worth a thousand words.
I am going to have to try this out down the road.

oldtimer will this work cutting off 1/2 of the cake that isnt fully colonized then placing it in a blender then just sprinkle it layer by layer?
By Oldtimer (Oldtimer) on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 - 12:35 am: EditWell... since the cake is already born you should/could remove uninoculated portion and use the grown portion. May have a little problem with contams, but I suspect if you use the fully colonized parts of the cake you'll be okay.
Right... grind the cake and sprinkle the powder over the straw. Mix in and layer more straw/powder till you fill your container or run out of powder. It will work out... good luck to you.
