Grade 9 Social Studies

Mr. Paul Stacey, Dept. Head,

Social Studies, B203

Fence # 27

Overview: Social studies is a part of everyone’s life. In grade 9 SST the focus is on the themes of social studies as they relate to Atlantic Canada and the place of Atlantic Canada in the Global Community.

SST9 Atlantic Canada in the Global Community consists of 5 units of study:

Physical Setting Culture Economics Technology Interdependence

For all of our courses, lessons include a broad range of balanced assessment strategies that give students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and attitudes. Assessments are no longer limited to testing what students have learned at the end of a lesson or unit. There is an increased focus on "formative assessment" (assessment "as" and "for" learning) where students receive regular and valuable feedback, directing them in additional learning needs.

Evaluation: The following units of study will be addressed:

Physical Settings 20%

Culture 20%

Economy 20%

Technology 20%

Interdependence 20% Course work 90% Exam 10%

Expectations:

·  Computers will be used in the course; therefore each student will need his/her password.

·  Students will be assigned the text Atlantic Canada in the Global Community. Students need to bring the text to class in order to complete assignments. Each student is responsible for the return or repayment of the textbook at the end of the course.

·  If you are not able to complete a major assignment on time, you must request an extension in writing (forms available in the office) with your parent/guardian’s consent no later than TWO (2) days before the due date. The teacher will assign a new due date in consultation with administration.

·  If you know you will be absent on a day that we have an assignment or project due, you must make arrangements prior to your absence with your teacher. This includes field trips, sporting events, school events, medical procedures, or vacations.

·  Students who miss a test (with a valid reason) will need to make arrangements to write the test when they return to school. An unexcused absence for a test will result in a zero.

·  All written work must be legible. Formal assignments must be in pen (blue/black) or be typed.

·  Extra help is available by appointment or at lunch hour.

·  No food or drink is permitted in class except for bottled water.

·  The scent free policy will be enforced due to health concerns.

·  The use of electronic devices such as MP3 players, ipods, digital cameras, etc. is not permitted in class.

·  Supplies necessary for the course include: binder, loose leaf, coloured pencils, ruler, glue stick, scissors, eraser, pens, and pencils.

·  Students and parents should keep track of assignments, due dates and marks on my web site.

·  Regarding plagiarism and academic integrity, please consult the student agenda.
