To Kill a MockingbirdJournals 5-8
Remember, your final for this class will be to pick one of the journal prompts we do throughout the unit to turn into a full narrative.
5. Jem tells Scout, “I declare to the Lord you’re gettin’ more like a girl every day!” (52) Write about a time you were told you couldn’t do something because you were a boy, girl, too young, too old, etc.
6. Scout starts using cuss words to act older than she is. Write about a time you wanted to be older than you were. What did you do? How did you act? This can be at any age.
7. Atticus is the attorney for a black man, which is controversial during the time period in rural Alabama. The Finches are called names in town by some of the other white people. However, Atticus said that if he didn’t do this he “couldn’t hold up [his] head in town” anymore (75). Write about a time you knew you would get a hard time for something, but felt you had to do it anyway, or did it anyway because you wanted to, regardless of how people felt.
8. Scout fights Cecil Jacobs (a boy at school) and her cousin Francis because of names that they called her father. She isn’t quite sure what the words mean, but she fights them anyway. Write about a time when you became aware of how other people talk, or learned that something was “bad” even if you weren’t quite sure why.
