Fromthe 1stJulyspecifiedauthorities,includingallschools (asdefinedinthe summaryofKeepingChildrenSafeinEducation,July2015), are subjectto adutyundersection26ofthe counter-terrorismandSecurityAct 2015(CTSA 2015),inthe exercise oftheirfunctions to have ‘due regardto the needto preventpeople frombeingdrawnintoterrorism’ (the preventduty).
Aim
AtCrowdys HillSchoolallstaffare expectedto upholdthe fundamentalprinciples ofBritishvalues,includingdemocracy,the rule oflaw,individualliberty,mutualrespectandtolerance ofthose withdifferentfaithsandbeliefs.These values are promotedthroughourculture andethos andthe waywe workthroughourcurriculum.

Introduction
AtCrowdys HillSchoolprotectingchildrenfromtheriskofradicalisationisseenaspartofourschools’widersafeguardingduties,andissimilarinnaturetoprotectingchildrenfromotherharms(e.g.drugs,gangs,neglect,sexualexploitation),whetherthesecome from withintheirfamily orare the productofoutsideinfluences.
Westrivetoprovideasafespaceinwhichchildren,youngpeopleandstaffcanunderstandtherisksassociatedwithterrorismanddeveloptheknowledgeandskillstobe able to challenge extremistarguments.
ThestatutoryguidanceonthePreventdutysummarisestherequirementsonschoolsinterms offourgeneralthemes:
RiskAssessment-beingabletodemonstratebothageneralunderstandingoftherisksaffectingchildrenandyoungpeopleintheareaandaspecificunderstandingofhowtoidentifyindividualchildrenwhomaybeatriskofradicalisationandwhattodo
tosupportthem.Aswithmanagingothersafeguardingrisks,staffshouldbealerttochangesinchildren’sbehaviourwhichcouldindicatethattheymaybeinneedofhelporprotection.
WorkingInPartnership -LocalSafeguardingChildrenBoards(LSCBs)areresponsibleforco-ordinatingwhatisdonebylocalagenciesforthepurposesofsafeguardingandpromotingthewelfareofchildrenintheirlocalarea.SafeguardingarrangementsshouldalreadytakeintoaccountthepoliciesandproceduresoftheLSCB.Effectiveengagementwithparents/thefamilyisalsoimportantastheyareinakeypositiontospotpotentialchanges.Itisimportanttoassistandadvisefamilieswhoraise concerns andbe able to pointthemtothe rightsupportmechanisms.
StaffTraining-SchoolsshouldensurethattheDesignatedSafeguardingLeadsundertake‘Prevent’awarenesstrainingandareabletoprovideadviceandsupporttoothermembers ofstaffonprotectingchildrenfromthe riskofradicalisation.
IT Policies-forschoolstoensurethatchildrenaresafefromterroristandextremistmaterialwhenaccessingtheinternetinschools,theyshouldensurethatsuitablefilteringisinplace.Moregenerally,schoolshaveanimportantroletoplayinequippingchildrenandyoungpeopletostaysafeonline,bothinschoolandoutside.Internetsafetywillusuallybeintegraltoaschool’sICTcurriculumandcanalsobeembeddedinMY FUTURE, MY WORLDandSRE.
Building Children’s Resilience to Radicalisation
Crowdys HillSchoolaimstobuildpupils’resiliencetoradicalisationbyprovidingasafeenvironmentsotheycanmakechoices,whilsthelpingthemtounderstandhowtheycaninfluenceandparticipateindecision-making.Wealreadypromotethespiritual,moral,socialandculturaldevelopmentofpupilsand,withinthis,fundamentalBritishvalues.Inaddition,Personal,SocialandHealthEducation(MY FUTURE, MY WORLD)isaneffectivewayofprovidingpupilswithtimetoexploresensitiveorcontroversialissues,andequippingthemwiththeknowledgeandskillstounderstandandmanagedifficult situations. MY FUTURE, MY WORLDisusedtoteach pupils to recogniseandmanagerisk,makesaferchoices,andrecognisetheirpersonalsafetyandwell-being.Westrivetoteachpupilstodevelopeffectivewaysofresistingpressures,includingknowingwhen,whereandhowtogethelp.PHSEhelpstoprovidepupilswiththeknowledge,skillsandunderstandingtopreparethemto playafullandactive partinsociety.
