AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE HONORABLE WILLIAM G. SHOCKLEY,DISTRICT 4 MAGISTRATE IN LEXINGTON COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE BENCH, AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that the Honorable William G. Shockleywill begin a welldeserved retirement after more than two decades of faithful magisterial service to the citizens of Lexington County on June 30, 2011; and
Whereas, born in Columbia on January 16,1939,he is the son of the late C. Gregg and Dorothy Austin Shockley; and
Whereas, after graduating from Dreher High School in 1958, William Shockley attended Wofford College and the University of South Carolina from 1958 to 1960; and
Whereas, from 1957 to 1965, he served in the United States Army Reserves in Military Government Unit 412 as a SpecialistE4 Crypto Operator with topsecret security clearance; and
Whereas, he married his beloved wife, the former Elizabeth “Betty” Lane, on December 18, 1960, and together they reared two fine children: C. Gregg Shockley and Constance S. Garner, who have blessed them with four adoring grandchildren; and
Whereas, in Columbia Judge Shockley and his family were members of Trinity Cathedral, and when he moved to the Mack Edisto Community of Lexington County in 1965, they joined Ebenezer United Methodist Church; and
Whereas, in 1973,he served as a member of the committee that organized and developed standards for the Lexington County Fire Service and has been an active volunteer fireman since 1974; and
Whereas, instrumental in acquiring land on which Mack Edisto Fire Station #7 is built, he has represented the station on the Fire Advisory Board and served as board chairman and facilitator; and
Whereas, he served with Lexington County Sheriff’s Department as a resident deputy for Swansea and Gastonfrom 1981 to 1989, and was appointed magistrate for District 4 in 1989; and
Whereas, he is amember of the South Carolina Summary Court Judges Association and active in that organization in his service on the Legislative Committee and with other special responsibilities; and
Whereas, while serving as magistrate, he attended the College of Charleston and received a twoyear degree from The South Carolina Legal Institute for NonLawyer Judges; and
Whereas, a member of Oliver Lodge #133 in Swansea since 1989, he has been a Mason for fortyseven years and has attained theoffice of Scottish RiteWorshipful Master; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are grateful for the legacy of leadership that the Honorable William G. Shockley has given toLexington County and appreciate the selflessservice he has provided to citizens of the Palmetto State for twentytwo years. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Honorable William G. Shockley,District 4 Magistrate in Lexington County, upon the occasion of his retirement from the bench, and wish him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable William G. Shockley.
