WPT’s “In Wisconsin” Reports on Canoe Heritage Museum in Spooner

The next episode of In Wisconsin on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) features reports on the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum in Spooner, the impact of climate change on the American Birkebeiner race in northern Wisconsin and the iconic Stormy Kromer hat. Also an essay by Author Michael Perry takes a humorous look at the dwindling woodpile.

The newsmagazine airs 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24 on WPT and is available in high definition. WPT will encore the program at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27. The program also will air at 11:30 a.m. on Milwaukee’s MPTV and on WDSE-TV in Duluth at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27.

A report from In Wisconsin Reporter Liz Koerner spotlights the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum in the small town of Spooner. Discover how a group of volunteers transformed an abandoned feed mill into a museum and classroom that is attracting visitors from around the world.

The American Birkebeiner is the largest cross-country ski race in North America. Eight thousand competitors travel 50 kilometers from Cable to Hayward. John Kotar, a Birkebeiner founder, discusses the beauty and tradition of the race, and the impact of climate change. In the past 60 years, winter temperatures have increased more than three degrees in Hayward. Finn Ryan reports. The report is part of a WPT initiative called Quest, a project that delves into issues about Wisconsin's environment. Visit questwisconsin.org on the Web for a multi-media approach to environmental reporting.

In Wisconsin’s Jo Garrett reports on a hat that has been part of Wisconsin’s history and culture for more than a century. The Stormy Kromer hat, invented by Kaukauna native Stormy Kromer, is a clever combination of a baseball hat with pull-down earflaps. Learn how the iconic hat was rescued from extinction.

A humorous essay from Michael Perry looks at wood burning and the shrinking woodpile.
