Why did you decide to study at Strathclyde?

I decided to study EEE at Strathclyde because of the excellent industrial links that the Department has. The research they carry out makes it a dynamic and an exciting place to be.

What aspects of your degree did you most enjoy?

I've really enjoyed the wide range of up-to-date classes that I have taken, and the opportunities the course has opened up to me. The individual and group projects that you carry out in the final years are extremely interesting, and teach you a lot about project management. These were what I enjoyed most in the degree, and gave me a lot to talk about in job interviews. As a result of my project work I attended the Universities Power Engineering Conference in Germany last year.

What are you doing now?

I am working with the Protection and Control team at Iberdrola Engineering and Construction, Bellshill, using a lot of aspects of power systems engineering that I have learnt throughout my degree.

Did you enjoy the University?

I really enjoyed studying at Strathclyde – the student body was really vibrant, and so there was always something going on. For the past four years I was involved with the Student Union’s CACTUS volunteer group, helping with projects for disadvantaged children, disabled people and the homeless. While at Strathclyde, I have also been able to try archery and sailing.

Description of Scholarships awarded

I was awarded a Power Academy Scholarship in my 2nd year, with UK Power Networks. This gave me invaluable work experience from a wide range of projects - finding faults on the electricity network, designing new customer connections and investigating new technologies (like smart meters and electric vehicles) with Low Carbon London project.
