Dear Seminar Parents and Students,

Welcome back! I hope your transition from summer relaxation to fall

learning has been a smooth one.

The fourth grade pullout class will be held on Wednesdays from

1:00P.M. – 3:00 P.M. beginning on September 30th. This year we will study topics dealing with architecture. We will delve into terminology, different styles, and even look into the construction of bridges and skyscrapers. There will also be a focus on problem solving as we attempt to create structures that serve different purposes. I think we will definitely have the opportunity to do some building too!

In addition to the seminar class, I also will be working alongside the regular classroom teachers weekly in most subject areas to provide enrichment and extension where it is necessary. I am looking forward to a wonderful, challenging year!

In order to accomplish our work, the students should be sure they have the following supplies for the first day of class:

  • A three-ring, 1 ½ inch binder with pockets inside the covers
  • A set of five dividers with tabs
  • A pencil case with three holes to be stored in the binder
  • Five pencils labeled with name
  • One large eraser labeled with name
  • One highlighter labeled with name
  • One bottle of glue labeled with name
  • One small sketchbook
  • A copy of the novel The Wright 3

by Blue Balliett

  • One box of Ziploc resealable sandwich bags

If any of these materials remain from last year, they can be re-used. Remember – all materials must be brought by the first day of class!

In the meantime, I encourage the students to begin to take a look at

architecture around them. Some suggestions are:

  • Take photographs of interesting architecture around your neighborhood. Make a scrapbook, slide show, or even an Animoto video.
  • Build something to share with the class using Legos, K’Nex, or even popsicle sticks.
  • Draw the façade of your Dream House. Try to find the names of some of the parts you used.
  • Look at the architectural links from my seminar website, and learn about Frank Lloyd Wright or famous architectural structures. Do you remember any tourist attractions from your country last year that are architectural wonders?
  • Come up with an idea of your own dealing with architecture. I’d love to hear about it.
