RULES AND REGULATIONS(2013-04-30)

AGES LEVELS IN SHOWMANSHIP CLASSES

  • Novice members 9-11 years old (before Jan 1 of the current year)
  • Junior members 12-14 years old (before Jan 1 of the current year)
  • Intermediate members15-17 years old (before Jan 1 of the current year)
  • Senior members 18-21 years old (before Jan 1 of the current year)

Only registered members are eligible to participate in any 4-H program or event

AGE LEVELS FOR CONFORMATION CLASSES

  • Heifer Calf – January 1 to May 31 of the current year
  • Heifer Junior Yearling – March 1 to December 31 of the previous year
  • Heifer Senior Yearling –January 1 to February 29, of the previous year
  • Market Heifers – must have a minimum of 3 to qualify for a separate class, are not eligible for the Sale
  • Steers –must weigh between 950 lbs – 1300 lbs to qualify for the Regional Champion Show
  • Companion animal - definition and eligibility to be verified and updated

BEEF DRESS CODE

  • White shirts (Only the traditional 4-H crest will be allowed on the front of the shirt)

Event sponsored shirts provided for every member are acceptable for that event day only.

Halter tops and sleeveless shirts are not acceptable.

  • Black pants
  • Steel-toed boots recommended
  • Show harness or belt clip
  • Leather halter for project

BEEF PROJECT REQIREMENTS

  • Project Animal Identification form (first statement)
  • RFID ear tag number
  • A tattoo and/or an approved ear tag
  • For non-registered animals, the tattoo could include the member’s initials and 4-H and/or the year the animal was born (for duplicate initials the letters must be changed)
  • All projects must be cared for by the 4-H member
  • All animals must be dehorned (horn free) unless breed specific
  • Club leaders may have special requirements ie project books, posters, clinics etc in order to complete

ANIMAL HEALTH

  • Refer to 4-H Ontario Livestock Policies 4.2.3
  • Refer to 4-H Ontario Livestock Project animal safety and best practices 5.7.2
  • All livestock should have no evidence of contagious disease. It is the responsibility of the 4-H exhibitor and parent to ensure animals showing evidence in active stages do not attend
  • In order to maintain the integrity of the 4-H program it prohibits the use of non-therapeutic drugs.

If drugging is detected the member will not be allowed to show livestock in any 4-H class (event) for the remainder of the calendar year. Project completion will be forfeited.

ACHIEVEMENT DAY

  • Must have completed their project to the satisfaction of their leader and in accordance with the 4-H requirements
  • The project must be cared for and shown by the 4-H member
  • Members must complete a minimum of 12 hours of meeting time
  • Participate in 2/3 of scheduled meetings
  • Each member is allowed to make up one meeting at the discretion of the club leader.

Alternatives could be a special meeting, attend a neighboring club of the same commodity or information day for applicable commodities.

  • Animal substitution - must be approved by club leader (showmanship) in order to complete
  • It is encouraged for members to attend their own designated clubsAchievement program; however other County Achievement programs are available. The member and leader must make arrangements and declare in advance
  • To accommodate those Carleton members that are unable to attend their own Achievement Day program they can attend the other Carleton Achievement show which will allow them to achieve and move onto the County Show however they will not be eligible to competefor championships or awards
  • The two Carleton Beef Achievement Day Shows are held at Navan Fair and Carp Fair
  • Open 4-H shows are not considered achievement days for Carleton 4-H members
  • Awards - each achievement day club is to confirm their own sponsors

COUNTY SHOW

  • Eligible members must participate in an Achievement Program
  • Complete their projectto thesatisfaction of their leader and in accordance with the 4-H Ontario requirements
  • Project must be cared for and shown by the 4-H member
  • Members with more than one commodity (Dairy andBeef)

Two projects can be shown at the County level however formembers showing two livestock projects a decision needs to be made prior to or at termination of the County Show beef show to allow the maximum number of eligible Carleton members to compete in the Regional Show.

  • Following the County Show the Beef selection committee will decide who qualifies for the Regional Show
  • All qualifying animals are to remain on the grounds over night in an assigned spot

REGIONAL SHOW

  • Eligible members must participate in an Achievement Program
  • Complete their project to the satisfaction of their leader and in accordance with the 4-H Ontario requirements
  • Project must be shown by the 4-H member
  • Participate and be selected from the County Show
  • An entry fee will be charged

REGIONAL 4-H STEER SHOW AND SALE

  • Must be a 4-H club member enrolled in the current 4-H Program and have successfully completed their club year. Steersmustbe a 4-H Project and must be shown at the local 4-H Achievement Day and local County Championship Show.
  • General rules of the 4-H Regional Championship Show will apply to 4-H Steer exhibitors.
  • Steers must be a minimum weight of 950 lbs at the 4-H Regional Champion Show. Steers in excess of 1300 lbs. will be paid at a maximum 1300 lb. weight.
  • All steers must be identified in three ways –a RFID ear tag, a tattoo or an approved ear tag and an approved first statement.
  • All steers must be shown by their 4-H member at the Regional Champion Show on Saturday morning and sold at the sale by the same 4-H member
  • The fitting of the steer and its preparation for the showing at the 4-H Regional Champion Show and Sale must be done by the 4-H member, in accordance with the overall 4-H Ontario philosophy
  • Eligibility for the sale of all steers will be based upon their conformation and quality of finish as determined by the 4-H Regional Championship Beef Judge on Saturday and final culling will be announced on Saturday afternoon.
  • The 4-H member must present their steer for weigh in on Friday between 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm and again following the Championship Showmanship Classes on Saturday at approx 1:00 pm. This time is approximate and subject to change pending show finish.
  • An entry fee will be deducted from the selling price for each animal. The commission for selling the steers off the selling price will be 15% for the Champion Steer, 10% for the Reserve Champion steer and 5% for all other steers. An additional 2% of all money will be donated to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario
  • A maximum of 25 steers will be shown and auctioned
  • Each 4-H member is responsible for inviting potential buyers to the sale

ROYAL AGRICULTURAL WINTER FAIR

1)NATIONAL JUNIOR HEIFER SHOW

  • National Junior Heifer Show is open to all Carleton beef members who have completed the Achievement Program,participated at both the County and Regional Show or with written approval by the Carleton 4-H Association Executive.
  • They must show their 4-H project
  • Members are responsible to submit their own entry forms or to co-ordinate with the county chaperone (if designated) to ensure the entry form and documentation is submitted.
  • The county is allotted 16 spaces at the Junior Beef Heifer Show RAWF. If there are more registrants than allotted an established County points system will be used to determine qualification

2)QUEEN’S GUINEAS SHOW

  • Must be a 4-H member to compete.
  • Members are responsible to submit their own entry forms and be knowledgeable of the rules and regulations of the Queen’s Guineas Show
  • Members are responsible for any special identification required by the Queens Guineas
