Workshop Descriptions - Wednesday, January 14

A Framework for Implementing Research Based Strategies to Support RTI, Pyramid of Interventions and SST

* Taylor County Upper Elementary School, Taylor County

In this workshop, our RTI Team will model how to implement best practices such as effective collaboration, creating and selecting individualized interventions at each tier, and implementing research based strategies to meet the needs of each learner. Our RTI Team will explain how we have successfully used data to make decisions that improve student achievement and meet individual needs at each tier. Participants will receive resources to support implementation in their schools.

An Ongoing Journey: Implementing RTI/SST County-Wide

* Richmond County School System

Our workshop will describe the necessary steps to adopting RtI for systems in the early stages of model development. Our department has written an RtI manual that contains information about the Pyramid of Interventions, the RtI/SST process, and numerous forms to aid in implementation, which may be most useful. We would like to share our journey which has been like building a jet plane while in flight, and not having it crash.

Building an RTI Plan – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!

* Coal Mountain Elementary, Forsyth County

Our workshop will share a plan for implementing a promising Response to Intervention program at the elementary school level. The plan includes: school pyramids that align with system and state RTI pyramids, how to identify students at risk, strategies and interventions used, and scheduling. Data will be shared illustrating program successes and challenges. Our plan for Response to Intervention is the scaffold for building strategies for our at risk learners in the Student Support Team process.

Champ Challenge – Student Success through RTI

* Chattahoochee Elementary School, Forsyth County

Chattahoochee Elementary School’s presentation will discuss many elements of our pyramid and RTI practices including: data analysis for student placement and progress; professional learning – best practices; scheduling – dedicated time; management of instructional personnel; selection of research based intervention programs; fidelity through observations; progress monitoring and strategic monitoring; Instructional Support Teams; SST – data comparison; psychological testing data; and finally…lessons learned.

Collaboration: The Key to Successful Response to Intervention

* Calhoun City School System

Collaboration in the Calhoun City Schools has led to effective RTI practices and positive change for the system including the SST level. Examples of current progress monitoring and intervention practices will be shared. An emphasis on “intervention” (the “I” in RTI) rather than reform has led to improvements at all tiers.

Glows and Grow with RTI – The Second Year

* St. Marys Elementary School and Camden County Schools, Camden County

RTI is alive and well in Camden County Schools. This presentation will piggyback on last’s year’s workshop by providing updates on recent refinements to schools’ intervention menus, enhancements to the district-wide data system for Tiers 1 and 2, integrating RTI into the system’s improvement plan, and the new roles of various team members. Implementing and coordinating an evolving RTI model will be highlighted from a principal’s perspective.

Progress Monitoring – A “Take and Use” Workshop

* Martin Elementary, Hall County

This workshop thoroughly explains how our school’s Student Support Team (Tier 3) and Intervention Teams (Tier 2) use student data (academic screenings, behavioral checklists, work samples, etc.) in conjunction with research based national norms to set appropriate and measurable student goals. Participants will be able to “take and use” practical forms that: screen for academic weaknesses, chart targeted behaviors, and record data for progress monitoring in all areas to determine intervention effectiveness.

Workshop Descriptions - Thursday, January 15

A Practical Guide for Launching a Successful RTI Team

* Thomson Middle School, McDuffie County

This presentation will describe the methodical steps taken to launch our RTI Team and our journey in creating a pyramid of intervention matched to the needs of our school. From the beginning, our RTI Team has engaged in continuous professional learning to improve our knowledge and support our faculty in providing interventions with fidelity. We have established a process to intervene early and succeed with the majority of our student population on Tier I and Tier II, instead of Tier III (SST) and Tier IV (Special Education).

8 to 4 …and Not a Minute More!

* Northview High School, Fulton County

Our workshop title underscores what we believe to be critical to the success of implementing student support – activities designed to improve student achievement during the contractual school day are the most effective. We focus on how a high school can begin implementing a systematic Pyramid of Interventions on a school-wide basis by creating a collaborative building consensus and infrastructure (through resource allocation and scheduling) that purposefully dedicates itself to improving student achievement.

Proactive Behavior Prevention and Intervention

* Long Cane Middle School, Troup County

As students transition from grade-to-grade in middle school, hormones and behavior change. Students who would be described as outstanding students and citizens in 6th grade may be described in 7th grade as discipline problems. A proactive Tier 1 and Tier 2 school-wide behavior plan ensure students on the fringe have a great opportunity for success. A behavior plan and progress monitoring of target behaviors provides concrete evidence that enhances students’ understanding of behavioral expectations.

RTI – Making It Work at Middle Grades

* St. Marys Middle School, Camden County

This workshop will highlight St. Marys Middle School’s RTI team,its structure, agenda for meetings, how data are utilized to make decisions, and the differences it is making in helping students to become successful. Information provided will demonstrate an RTI meeting. Participants will come away with ideas on how to set up an RTI team, run meetings and how to use data driven decisions to fluidly move students through the Pyramid of Intervention.

Secondary RTI Behavioral Toolkit

* Special Session

This presentation will include training materials geared to middle and high schools which help build capacity to support effective RTI behavioral practices. The session will redeliver and highlight effective tools and practices from national presentations on RTI at the Secondary level. Practitioner tools and training materials will be provided beginning with a Tier 1-instructional focus which teaches behavior and provides samples of positive behavior support frameworks.

SST and RTI: Making It Work for All

* Medlock Bridge Elementary, Fulton County

This session will discuss the effective practices that a school can utilize to support students AND staff through successful implementation of the SST and/or RTI processes for student success. With a successful pyramid of interventions in place for over five years, Medlock Bridge has clearly identified students with needs and supported them at all levels (academic, social, emotional). The underlying processes that support successful SST/RTI implementation will be discussed, as well as strategies for teacher data collection and/or interventions in the classroom.

System-wide Positive Behavior Support Implementation

* Lee County School System

Lee County School System implemented a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) system-wide through a problem solving model in order to analyze discipline and academic data and provide effective interventions. This presentation will focus on system level implementation including the alternative school and high school. The presenters will describe the process of gathering and analyzing data to design appropriate behavioral and academic interventions matched to the needs of the various schools and levels. PBS offers a range of interventions that are systematically applied to students and which address the role of the environment.

Systematic Implementation of Response to Intervention and Challenges at the High School Level
