SUBJECT: EARLY CHILDHOOD YEAR 12 Sem 2, 20__

TOPIC: ACCIDENT PREVENTION & SAFETY CRITERION 2: REASONING

HANDED OUT: DATE DUE:

STUDENT: ______TEACHER:

Playgrounds and outdoor play equipment offer children fresh air, friends, and exercise. So it's important for parents to make sure that faulty equipment, improper surfaces, and careless behavior don't ruin the fun. Each year, more than 200,000 children are treated in hospital ERs for playground-related injuries. Many of these could have been prevented with the proper supervision.

You can make the playground entertaining and safe for your children by checking equipment for potential hazards and following some simple safety guidelines.

Teaching children how to play safely is important: If they know the rules of the playground, they are less likely to get hurt.

Before you visit a playground, check to make sure that play areas are designed to allow an adult clear sight at all times of the children while they are playing on all the equipment.

TASK: You are to analyse and evaluate the safety of Playground equipment at ______Park. Write a report for the Fraser Coast Council outlining your findings. Your analysis should cover the following.

·  Site – physical location

·  Structures – playground equipment

·  Materials – what equipment is made of

·  Design - layout

·  Ground Surface

·  Potential Risks of the different areas

NOTE:

PICTURES are essential to get your message across to the councillors regarding your analysis in particular your concerns about the safety of the playground. See teacher for examples of photos for reference.

Your report should use the format given below:

FIRST PARAGRAPH

Introduction, which:
·  Gives the background (why is it necessary to analyse and evaluate the playground
·  Explains the purpose, scope and methods used (observations)
·  Outlines the terms of reference (safety requirements)
·

BODY OF REPORT

The body, which:
·  covers the work done (photographs) and what you found (positives and negative issues).
·  should be divided into topics (issues) which should be arranged in a logical order with headings and sub-headings.
·  use each of the headings above to describe and analyse the safety of the equipment.

CONCLUSION

Conclusion covers
·  the writer’s judgement on information in the body of the report.
·  the writer’s judgement of significance in the points mentioned.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendations describe and evaluate improvements to the equipment to make it as safe as possible. i.e
·  gives solutions to problems
·  suggests possible courses of action as a result of the conclusions e.g.
ü  who should take the action
ü  what should be done
ü  when and how it should be done
