Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Over the next twenty weeks (one semester), students will learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to help our students develop good work habits that will last for their entire lives. The following lists some of the topics we will cover:

1.  Setting Goals

2.  The Right Study Environment

3.  Managing Time

4.  Note-taking Skills

5.  Memory Techniques

6.  Test-taking Skills

7.  Learning Styles

8.  Developing Healthy Relationships at Home and School

9.  Reports & Projects

10.  Presentation Skills

Students’ grades will be determined by their participation, notes, organization of folders/binders/backpack and agenda completion. On Fridays, students will participate in team building activities (TBoF – Team Building on Friday). Each night, I ask that you review your child’s agenda, sign at the bottom and make sure the homework is filed neatly in his or her backpack. After the 5-week Progress Report, I will determine if parent signatures are needed on a daily or weekly basis.

Materials: Grading Scale:

·  A SMALL spiral notebook Agenda Checks 40%

·  Black and/or Blue Pens In-Class Participation 20%

·  Pencils Homework 20%

·  USB Flash Drive TBoF 20%

Classroom Expectations:

1.  The student is expected to be IN his/her seat (not in the hallway, doorway, or by a friend’s desk) and both mentally and physically prepared to work by the time the tardy bell rings to be on time. Tardies will affect the Cooperation grade.

2.  The student is expected to copy the classwork and homework for ALL their classes into their agenda book each period. There will be an agenda check in EVERY FRIDAY. I will be checking for daily parent signatures each week.

3.  The student is expected to bring all necessary supplies to class everyday (see Materials list above). This will affect the Work Habits grade.

4.  The student is expected to be safe, respectful, and responsible during class. Always be courteous and cooperative towards your teachers and classmates. This will affect the Cooperation and Work Habits grade.

5.  The student is expected to write neatly. Illegible or sloppy work will not be graded.

6.  A graded assignment is like a receipt. Students should save ALL graded work as proof in case of a question regarding a grade.

7.  The BELL does NOT dismiss you, I DO! I will dismiss you when the class is quiet and clean.

After reading the attached parent letter with your child, please complete the information below and return this page ONLY. It will become part of their in-class Leadership folder. The remaining pages are to be kept in each student’s binder for future reference.

Thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at work (818) 654 – 3300, send a note in an envelope or your child’s agenda book, OR you may email me at . Email is the best way to reach me J

Together we’re better,
