FRENCH
ADVANCED PLACEMENT
(JULY 2000)
The Advanced Placement French program is designed for highly motivated students in secondary school who are in the final stages of their secondary school training and who are interested in completing studies comparable in content and in difficulty to courses in French Composition and Conversation at the third-year college level. Students who enroll in the Advanced Placement Program in French Language should already have a good command of French grammar and vocabulary and have competence in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Although these qualifications may be attained in a variety of ways, the normal prerequisite is secondary French 1, 2, 3, 4 or the equivalent.
This course emphasizes the use of language for active communication with a special emphasis on the organization and writing of compositions, and has for its objectives the development of:
a. the ability to understand spoken French in a variety of contexts;
b. a French vocabulary sufficiently ample for reading newspaper and magazine articles, literary texts, and other non-technical writings without dependence on a dictionary;
c. the ability to express oneself coherently, resourcefully, and with reasonable fluency in both written and spoken French.
This course presumes a minimum of one after 4 years of French at the secondary level to two academic years' course work after 3 years of French at the secondary level in advanced language with a class meeting five periods a week, with a period being approximately 40 minutes. It culminates at the beginning of May of the second year with an AP French Language exam that is approximately two and 3/4 hours long (84 minutes of multiple choice questions on listening and reading; 75 minutes of free-response writing and speaking). The exam evaluates level of performance in the use of the language, both in understanding written and spoken French and in responding in correct and idiomatic French. The course is divided into 20 essential outcomes, 10 for each year.
This course supports and is aligned to the success orientations, competencies, and knowledge noted in the QSI Program.
