Guidelines for Success:
This course continues the refinement of the skills introduced during first year (listening, reading, spelling/writing, and speaking) and is conducted mostly in German. Vocabulary and grammar play an important role as the student moves toward more personalized, meaningful communication. Additionally, cultural awareness concerning the German-speaking nations will remain a focus.
I. Classroom Rules and Procedures
In German class, before we can do any of the above, you need to
Be respectful: How?
1)
2)
3)
4)
Be responsible: How?
1)
2)
3)
4)
If you make good choices based on the above and maintain a positive outlook, you will succeed in language study. Choosing otherwise impacts your success negatively, and there are always consequences.
We will be practicing various procedures throughout the year in order to have the class operate efficiently and effectively. One of those involves a classroom partner; others deal with learning together as a class or in cooperative groups. Details on all of these will be discussed as the year progresses. The idea is to have a concrete plan of classroom management that functions from the first day until exams in June. You the learner will ultimately benefit from this.
II. Daily Materials
*personal 3 Ring notebook/handouts
*workbook (for purchase)
*text
*pens/pencils
*other items as needed (props, the Internet, CDs, realia, etc.)
III. Assessments
Tests follow each chapter we complete, and quizzes/projects can be assigned at ANY time. This course also includes a midterm and final exam. Please be aware that certain assessments may be sent home upon completion with the student while others may not (this will also be clarified on HAC). Students will always be able to see any of their results and/or review them at a mutually convenient time. I will also provide the option as the year progresses for students to choose items for a portfolio folder. Speaking assessments and/or verbal presentations will be assigned throughout the year. Homework will be assigned daily and checked in some way the next school day. I employ a total point grading system, yet you the student are responsible for maintaining a record of your own grades. Each of you will have the opportunity to earn 5 points per day according to your active participation in all aspects of class, for a maximum total of 25 points (out of 25 possible) per week. Above all, this means using as much German as possible.
IV. Make-up Policy
If you know you will be absent, see me as soon as you know. I then expect all work completed within a day or two of your return, so it is your responsibility to check with your partner and voluntarily show me your progress. The common procedure is to work alone or with a partner during class, which in turn makes that day’s classwork your homework. Please see me for other arrangements such as after school help.
