The Outsiders - Assessment
For your final assessment on ‘The Outsiders’ you must choose any ONE of the following projects.
1. Write a eulogy for either Johnny, Dally or Bob.
-Choose a character who you think would be asked to give a eulogy at the funeral of one of these characters. As that character, write and deliver a speech about his life and what he meant to you. You must include facts and events from the book as well as character observations about who they were and why they were important. The eulogy must be 500 words minimum. Your developed character maps will be valuable in the creation of your eulogy. Remember, your eulogy will be read out loud, so make sure you read it aloud while editing.
2. Create a soundtrack for your own movie version of ‘The Outsiders’.
- You have just been hired to be the musical director for the new movie version of the book. He has asked you to put together a sampling of the songs that you would put on the soundtrack. You must have at least 5 songs, and an explanation of what scene each fits with and why. Each explanation must be at least 100 words and describe how the song fits the action in that scene. Since the movie takes place in 1967, the music should fit in with the time period. You must also burn a CD with the songs and create artwork to go with it.
3. Write a newspaper article about the boys’ heroism in Windrixville.
- After the fire, a newspaper article is written about the boys being heroes. Write this newspaper article. Then, make the newspaper page including headlines, pictures, etc. the article must be 1-2 pages (500 words minimum) formatted as a newspaper- you need to fill all the space- look at a real newspaper- no space is ever left empty.
4. Create a movie trailer for the new version of the film.
- The new version of The Outsiders needs a trailer to get the audience interested in seeing it. Use music and quotes as well as foreshadowing and important scenes from the book (but don’t give away the whole story). Film the trailer (at least 2-1/2 minutes) and then write a description of why you believe this trailer makes audiences want to see the film
5. Essay
“There are no bad kids only sad kids”
Answer this question in relation to ‘The Outsiders’. Your essay should be 500 words in length and must include quotes from the text, your character maps will be very beneficial for the essay. Please discuss both the Greasers and the Socs in your response.
