ADVANCED BIOLOGY 11

Plant Project

Part 1 Research Project- This part is up to you. Design a small experiment in which you grow plants and investigate some plant response … growth, movement, etc. The experiment should display a well-researched topic and a very specific hypothesis with controlled variables and proper scientific method. Aim to have plants grown by Easter. You may work with a partner on this part of the project, but the rest is done by you alone. We will discuss format etc. at greater length. Topic description and experiment outline is due no later than ______.

Part 2 Plant Classification- the plant kingdom can be divided into vascular and nonvascular plants. Vascular may be broken down into spore producing, flowering (angiosperm) and cone bearing (gymnosperm) plants. Within flowering plants there are monocot and dicot plants. How do all these groups fit together? Using resources available to you create a neat, well organized, colorful user friendly guide to these plant phyla. This should include written descriptions and diagrams. No photocopies or downloaded images!! 4 page limit

Part 3 Plant Nutrition – This section should include diagrams and explanations of leaf, root and stem structure, the role of various nutrients (micro and macro), the role of the soil, the symbiosis of plants and soil microbes and carnivorous plants. There is a lot of information here so sift through it carefully and organize it thoughtfully. Again….hand drawn diagrams or your own photos. 4 page limit

Part 4 Plant Reproduction- Focus on the angiosperm life cycle. Include diagrams of flowers, life cycle, pollination, ovule development, structure and germination. Also look at various mechanisms for seed dispersal. No photocopies or downloaded images. Original photos are great. 4 page limit

A reference list is required. Please use proper format. The library has a description of proper format (drop in and pick one up)

Please take the time to write this information in your own words – DO NOT CUT AND PASTE … you may use photographs but no downloaded images please. This means you must do your best to draw diagrams.
