End of Maus I Activity
As we finish reading Maus I, you are being asked to reflect on what you have read and predict what you will read in Maus II. Because we are looking at the intersection of visual images and words, we will be doing the same for this activity. To complete this activity, please complete the following parts in order.
Part One: Visual Representation
1) Think about 4-5 of the most impactful or emotional images/symbols you have encountered in the first book. Find pictures of these (draw them yourself, find pictures in magazines, etc) and create a collage. Your collage should include these 4-5 pictures/symbolic representations and 3-4 words you think are also integral to the understanding of the novel. Please paste these in an aesthetically pleasing way on one side of a piece of construction paper or a Word document.
- Main Goal of Step One: Visually represent the first book, thinking about symbolism and the main events in the story so far.
2) Next, you must predict what we will see in the second book, and visually represent the themes, events, etc. through symbolic pictures. Keep in mind, you have already been informed of the historical significance and events; your symbols or images can represent how you think the characters will interact/respond to the events. Please follow the same guidelines in the first step (i.e number of pictures, where to find the pictures, number of words, etc). Please paste these in an aesthetically pleasing way on the other side of the piece of construction paper or Word document.
- Main Goal of Step Two: Predict what symbols or images will be represented and important in the second book.
Part Two: Written Explanation of Visual Representation
Please describe the products you have created, in detail. The following steps describe how this should be done, in order to receive full credit.
1) Explain your visual representation of Maus I first. Describe the significance of each word and image. Please describe in detail, explaining the reason for choosing the image/word, and evidence from the text to support your choice. Please do so for each image and each word, making sure your explanation is in-depth and thorough.
2) Do the same for the visual prediction of Maus II. However, instead of citing evidence (which would be difficult to do, as we have not finished the second book yet), please tell me what supports this prediction. This could be your knowledge of this time period (from our discussions or other venues) or this could be instances of foreshadowing within Maus I. Either way, I need to know you have a reason for predicting the images/words chosen.
There is no length requirement for this assignment. However, your responses, if done well, will be roughly 2-3 sentences for each word or image displayed.
Learning Targets/Standards
Each learning target contains a description of what a ‘4’ looks like.
