Triangle Transversals
Supplies Needed: One 3 x 5 index card. One 8 ½ X 11 sheet of computer paper. Half sheet of poster board 22 x 14 (any color). Six colored markers RED, BLUE, GREEN, ORANGE, PURPLE AND YELLOW. Protractor. Scissors. Glue.
Steps:
1. Using the index card, create an Acute Scalene Triangle.
2. Label the angles 1, 2 and 3. Measure each angle with the protractor to the nearest degree. *Make note, all three angles must add up to 180°. Write the measures in the angles on the triangle.
3. On the bottom left corner of the computer paper, trace the triangle and translate it across the entire page tracing it each time you translate. Copy the angle names (1, 2, or 3) each time you copy the triangle.
4. Once you have gone across the entire page, rotate the triangle and trace it back into the “empty” space. Continue copying the angle names (1, 2, or 3) each time you copy the triangle. You should notice that Parallel Lines are forming.
5. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have filled the entire paper. *Note: you must place the triangle so that the vertices match with the row below. You should have the same size triangle covering the page, each with angles labeled 1, 2 or 3.
6. You will notice the page now has many parallel lines with several transversals. Use you knowledge of angle pairs to identify ONE pair of each of the following:
Same Side Interior = ORANGE / Vertical Angles = PURPLE / Linear Pair = YELLOW
7. Assemble your poster board (1/2 sheet) including the following:
· Your drawing including colored angle pairs
· Your triangle showing angle measurements adding up to 180°
· Legend explaining different angles pairs and their corresponding COLOR
· Name, Period and Teacher’s name in the LEFT TOP CORNER.
