Parent Engagement:

Ms. Rodriguez, President and the PTA Board are exploring the idea of planning a bus trip to an outlet closed to the shopping season to build parent community, inviting experts to do presentation on money management, and other activities such as Family Night.

Parents are also encouraged to invite presenters for other PD that can help capacity in our school.

WHSAD website can be a tool to get more parents informed and connected to our school community. A section can be added for WHSAD PTA so parents can stay updated and also provide feedback. Ms. Rodriguez suggested adding apps that can help parents.

Workshops:

Parent/Student Portfolio Night will begin in October. Freshmen parents are required to attend 2 workshops. These workshops will introduce parents and students to the importance of creating a portfolio throughout their four-year sequence at WHSAD. Parents from all cohorts are encouraged to participate.

Some parents are requesting the time of the workshops moved to later instead of 5:30 P.M.

School Improvement:

One of the improvements for our building Mr. Cornell, Principal is looking into is redoing the bathrooms. These types of capital improvement will take parent improvement and activism ( such as parents’ calls and post card campaign) to set it in motion. With the expenses of extensive exterior improvement for our building, source of funding might be challenging. In the past, we have been able to secure some fund from Councilmen. The two for our zone are Levine and Reynoso.

Planning for college:

Guidance Counselors are planning a fall, day trip as well as a spring, overnight trip for juniors to explore college options. For studentswho are 16 years old by next summer, they are encouraged to apply for the summer internship program to enhance their resume for college as well as post-secondary employability.

Schools are allotted an amount of money from DOE to fund internships.

Co-op Tech is another option for students not planning to go to college. They can learn welding, auto mechanic, carpentry, culinary, electrical, etc.

Some of the city agencies that are always recruiting are : Office of Construction, Fire Department, Department of Environmental.
