LIONS PRACTICE WITH ROBBIE FTOREK, ERIE OTTERS COACH
What an honor for our boys!! Robbie Ftorek currently coaches the Erie Otters. He conducted a 1.5 hour hockey camp with the 99 Travel Team on August 18, 2008. Intense and dynamic, Coach Ftorek imparted valuable lessons on defensive and offensive positioning, skating, and stick handling.
He has more than 35 years of coaching and playing experience. His coaching career began in 1985-86 with the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League and included stops as a National Hockey League Head Coach in Los Angeles (1987-89), New Jersey (1998-00) and Boston (2001-03). In 443 NHL games the 55 year-old posted a winning percentage of .581 with a 229-157-44-13 (W-L-T-OTL) record. Ftorek also served as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils and Quebec Nordiques at the NHL level and as a Head Coach in the AHL with Halifax, Utica and Albany, where he was named AHL Coach of the Year in 1994-95 and 1995-1996.
Ftorek started his playing career as a member of the US Olympic Team in 1971-72 and went on to play 881 professional games including 334 games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Quebec Nordiques and New York Rangers and another 373 games in the World Hockey Association with the Phoenix Roadrunners and the Cincinnati Stingers.
LIONS DEFEAT WHEATFIELD IN LEAGUE OPENER
The Kelly Law Firm EYHA 99 AA travel hockey team opened their Western NY Amateur Hockey League (WNYAHL) regular season on October 18 with a 5-1 win versus the Wheatfield Blades (Buffalo) at the Hockey Outlet in NY. Their hard work at practice showed as the boys “carried play” throughout the game.
LIONS DOMINATED THREE RIVERS CUP TOURNAMENT IN PITTSBURGH
The lions displayed their fierce game play throughout the weekend tournament. They won 3 of 3 games making them undefeated going into the championship game. In the championship game, the Lions thoroughly dominated yet lost the game 0 to 1. The Lions hit every post, crossbar and stick…they just didn’t get the bounces they needed and were unable to put it past the goal line. Great effort boys…terrific tournament! Next tournament is scheduled for January in Cambridge, Ontario for the Preston Cup Tournament.

OCTOBER RAFFLE FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS
The raffle fundraiser for the team, held October 30 at Buffalo Wild Wings was an outstanding success! Team parents sold tickets August thru October. Buffalo Wild Wings Manager, Ryan Hildebrand drew the winning tickets. First winner: Donovan Cullen…he chose the 42” plasma tv. Second winner: Brian Galleur…he received the autographed Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penquins official jersey. Thanks to our parents and the generosity of our sponsors and donors, the team raised enough funds to cover the purchase of needed equipment and to defray expenses for tournament and non-league play. See below for a listing of our sponsors and donors, and please take every opportunity to thank them.
