GUIDELINES

This program provides an opportunity for print artists to learn basic skills and knowledge of Japanese water-based woodblock printmaking (Mokuhanga).

Hereinafter, Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory will be referred to as ‘THE ORGANIZER’, and this program itself as ‘THE PROGRAM’.

1Eligibility

  1. Be a visual artist (including designer, illustrator and bookmaker) or a teacher.
  2. To have some experience with woodblock printmaking; even if we accept applicationsfrom artists at all levels, please note that the Program consists of fundamental Mokuhanga training so it may not prove satisfactory to artists who have had extensive experience in this field.
  3. To raise funds for necessary costs by themselves.
  4. To understand English or Japanese enough to achieve meaningful participationin the Program.
  5. To be in good health and have this fact attested in a medical statement by a doctor issued one or two months prior to arrival.The residence and studio are located on the second floor; please be aware that the residence house is an old Japanese traditional house and there are no elevator or escalator facilities.
  6. To be willing to follow the activities and residential arrangements as planned by the MI-LAB.
  7. To follow residence regulations and manage residence and studio life safely and peacefully.
  8. To be eager to communicate in good spirit with other participating artists and local people, and thereby contribute to mutual understanding and goodwill between Japan and other countries.
  9. To accept the donation of the prints which you make during the Program.

2Participation fee

This is self-supported program.The participation fee is JPY 358,732 including a consumption tax and PayPal's handling fee. Please follow the payment instruction in the attached invoice.

Artist who intends to participate by a grant preferably make sure to gain the fund before signing agreement of participation. The application for grants is at artists’ responsibility.

4Organizer’s obligations

The Organizer provides the artist the followings in Lake Kawaguchi residence (hereunder: MI-LAB):

  1. A private room with a standard single bed and bedclothes.
  2. Communal printmaking studio furnished with working tables, tools and materials.
  3. Technical instructor and adviser for carving and printing at studio.
  4. Necessary quantity and size of printing woodblocks, papers, paints and other basic materials.
  5. (for Basic Training Program)3 basic carving knives (In-tou, Hangi-to, Maru-to x2, Sankaku-to, Hiramaru-to x 2, Kento-nomi), 2 round brushes, 3 stick brushes, and 2 barens for individual use, which artists can take back home after the Program.
    The Organizer rents extra printmaking tools and sharpening wet stones in the studio.
  6. Communal spaces as follows: library with internet connection, kitchen,dining, shower room and laundry room.
  7. Materials information and help ordering additional materials and tools during the Program.
  8. The Organizer will arrange a group exhibition of prints donated by the artists (the date to be defined).

5Artists’ obligations

Artists are asked to create at least 2 different images during the Program and donate two prints of each image among them to the Organizer. The Organizer has the ownership and copyrights of the donated prints, while the artists can take home other prints and carved woodblocks.

Artists are also supposed to:

  1. Get their own return flight ticket at own expense.
  2. Get a visa if needed; please refer to your travel office or Japanese Embassy in your country.
  3. Travel by themselves at their own expense between International Airport and Fujikawaguchiko-cho where the MI-LAB Residence is located (or other place indicated by the Organizer[i]).
  4. Prove that they are in good health in a medical statement issued by a doctor one month prior to arrival.
  5. Get travel insurance for accidental injury and sickness in Japan, and send the Organizer a photocopy of the contract with policy issuing date and contract number before your departure by fax or E-mail.
  6. Purchase additional printmaking materials and tools if they need.
  7. Cover food expense; it costs approx. 30,000/40,000 JPY per month using communal kitchen.The Artist can also order a lunch box from the local restaurant.
  8. Reside in their allocated accommodation for the entire Program and be present in the studio all weekdays and some weekends when official events/special lectures are planned, which will be indicated in the Program schedule. Artists’ absence from the studio on weekdays will be accepted only under extraordinary circumstances which must be informed to the Organizer in advance. Changing room requests cannot be accommodated.
  9. Notify the Organizer their absence on weekends in case they travel outside of the Residence town; Artists’ own activities are permitted only on weekends when no official event planned.
  10. Own the risk for their activities outside the Residence.
  11. Refrain from activities not related to the Program such as commercial activities, or those of improper nature. The Organizer does not take responsibility for such activities or their consequences.
  12. Ask the Organizer’s permission for inviting personal guests at the MI-LAB. No guests including spouses, partners and familyare permitted to stay nightsat MI-LAB Residence.
  13. Accept film/photographic documentation by the Organizer and that Organizer has their copyright.
  14. Accept the Program conditions and possible change in the provided schedule.
  15. Ask the Organizer’s permission to document events and facilities including instructor/advisor’s demonstrations.
  16. Share MI-LAB cooperatively with other artists and staffs, keep clean each room and communal space, and not to smoke in the building.
  17. Fill a questionnaire and write a report on their Residence life and Studio work.
  18. Accept press or researcher’s interviews during or after the Program.
  19. Give a short presentation of their art work during the Program.
  20. Cooperate with local people in the open studio program.

[i] Please consider the local traveling time before booking your flight; generally it takes 4/6 hours between Narita Airport and Fujikawaguchiko-cho, for which it’s difficult to reach MI-LAB residence on the first day with arriving by evening flight / to catch the morning flight on the last day unless staying a hotel near the airport on the previous day. The route guidance will be provided before your arrival in Japan.
