If you are planning to drink you need to plan if you are going to drive. You need to think about who will drive back home.

How does drinking affect your brain: there is less activity in your brain if you drink and you are 15 years old.

Teen drinkers perform worse in verbal and nonverbal memory and attention focusing. Teens can drink more without passing out.

The younger you start drinking have more trouble with dependence later in life.

Binge drinking: 5 or more drinks in one session if you are a male, 4 or more drinks if you are a female.

4.4 million teens under 21 are classified as binge drinkers, including 1.7 million heavy drinkers.

Alcohol is involved in over 40% of accidental falls.

Alcohol is involved in 48% of hypothermia and frostbite cases.

It contributes to 70% of violent behavior on campuses.

64% of deaths are alcohol related.

Don’t leave your friend alone.

Watch out for your male and female friends so they don’t make wrong choices

Alcohol is a legal drug. Blood Alcohol concentration is the drops of alcohol in your blood. Your emotional state of mind affects how you respond to alcohol. If you have a larger body or are fattier the less alcohol will affect you. Females have more fat so they absorb more alcohol. Medication can have an affect on alcohol and your liver.

The Mexican government began to see that they didn’t need to buy much sudoefedrine and eventually they banned it.

The pharmaceutical companies are against regulation because they want people to buy it over the counter. They say that it is too expensive for consumers to afford these meds if it is prescription only

Journal #37 Pregnancy Options

Keep the Baby – about 57% of teens decide to keep – they choose to raise the baby alone or with family or partner. Teen has the right to keep baby regardless of age, finances, etc.

WIC – women with children program that helps with food and everything else. Get prenatal care. If one parent decides to participate less, the other will be required by law to support the child until the child is 18. The cost to raise a child is about $800,000 up until 18.

Abortion 29% - ending pregnancy by removing embryo or fetus from the uterus. Don’t need parents permission. Medical abortions must be done within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy by giving the mother medications that cause contractions, this takes about 3 days. Surgical type takes about 13 weeks and the fetus is removed through vacuum aspiration in the doctors office. There can be complications so you need a follow-up visit. These are covered by medical.

Adoption 1% - when you give up rights and responsibilities for a child. Decision is permanent but you can decide the parents if you want. Private or open adoptions are possible. You can get help with adoption expenses. Adoption connection, independent adoption center, safe surrender law which means you can give up the child within 72 hours of birth.

Laws regarding social media and sexual assault. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

208,000 cases of sexual assault each year in the US. 44% of victims are under 18 years old.

Story of Audrie Pott from Saratoga. 15 year old drank too much, passed out. When she woke up she had things written all over her body. Someone took pictures and posted them on the web. The law of unintended consequences.

Not a defense to rape: others were involved too, drunk or high, victim asked for a condom, victim had sex with offender before, victim had a bad reputation, wearing revealing clothing.

Methods:

Hormonal

–  The Pill - 92-99% effective, prevents ovulation, thickens the mucous. Many people don’t take them regularly. Does not start working until two weeks after you start using. It has no STD protection. Protects against certain cancers. Can lead to cancer if you smoke. Need a doctor’s visit.

–  The Patch – 99% effective. Works the same as the pill. If you are a swimmer or have sensitive skin it will not be the best choice. Does not prevent stds.

–  Nuva Ring – 98-99% effective. Need a prescription. Irregular bleeding, skin irritation.

–  Depoprovera – 99% effective, doesn’t prevent STDs. Irregular bleeding, Can reduce cramps and anemia. You have to go to the doctors every three months.

–  IUD – over 99% effective. Inserted by a doctor. It stays in the uterus. It is a long term birth control method. Lighter periods, prevents certain cancers, not recommended if you have multiple partners.

–  Plan B – emergency contraception – 75% -89% effective taken after unprotected sex. Needs to be taken within 5 days. Doesn’t prevent STDs. Can’t use frequently.

–  Barrier methods

Condoms - 86-98% effective. Protects against STDs. Don’t need prescription. Most are latex, can break. Female condoms are not as effective. Can be used for anal sex.

Diafram – used to protect the cervix when used with the spermacide.

Implanon – protects or 3 years. It is implanted inside the arm. It is a good choice if you are forgetful.
