Event Organiser’s Report

Paul Haggerty (VC St Raphael / Waite Contracts / Hewitt Cycles) won the Reading CC Colin Roberts Memorial ‘10’ from a near-full field. Seeded 3rd on entry times he proved fastest on the day, recording a rare sub-21 minute time on the A4 Woolhampton – Thatcham course. Jacqui Warinton of Middlesex RC was fastest woman.

Husband and wife Gary and Kathryn Kristensen placed 2nd male and 2nd female respectively, having requested start times at opposite ends of the field so that baby care duties could be shared (I did my best to accommodate early and late starts). Last man off Andrew Cooper, wearing 120, placed 3rd. The evergreen John Woodburn was 10th overall and, by some margin, winner of veteran on standard. 17 year-old David Kingsbury of High Wycombe CC was the fastest of three juniors. 12 year-old Justin Lakey was fastest juvenile, beating his 14 year-old sister Rebecca.

The event faced a major hitch when I could not find the keyholder for Padworth village hall. Fortunately I was able to arrange for us to use Aldermaston primary school – I hope this did not upset your plans too much. The weather was not all that I had hoped for, the stiff Westerly breeze made the going hard to the turn, but the return leg was fast despite the temporary road surface in Woolhampton. Thirteen of you improved upon your line 1 entry form times – congratulations – so it could not have been too bad a day. I was glad that the rain stayed away.

I received a much larger entry than in recent years, 120 in all, with four tandem crews, 13 women, 99 men, and 5 riders under 18. I am not entirely sure why the event was more popular this year but I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and will come back next year.
