Obtaining Microsoft’s TCP/IP stackfor Windows for Workgroups
Prior to installing Microsoft’s TCP/IP stack, you must obtain Microsoft’s TCP/IP stack from RCS. To do this you must have a 1.4mb diskette on which to copy the Microsoft TCP/IP stack plus the freeware FTP and Telnet programs to use with it.
The loaddisks program is the RCS program used to obtain the Windows for Workgroups copy of the Microsoft TCP/IP stack and freeware programs. To successfully copy the necessary material onto your diskette, you must login to an RCS workstation that has a diskette drive. These are located throughout campus, if you have a problem go to VCC Help Desk and ask where to locate a workstation that can use diskettes.
After login, place the diskette in the diskette drive. With the left mouse button, select UNIX: Start a Unix Window from the RCS Applications window. When a UNIX window appears, place your cursor inside the window and type:
setup loaddisks
loaddisks
The loaddisks program presents the following screen:
Using the left mouse button select packages to get the list of available packages, similar to that shown below.
Select Samba-wfw and then select the Load disk1 button.
The program will request that you put your diskette in the drive. Do so, if you have not already done so, then select OK and the disk image will be copied to your diskette.
When finished, the program will report the successful completion as shown below.
Select OK. The program will return to the original screen.
Select quit, remove your diskette from the workstation, and logout.
The disk contains an install program which will make a samba directory on your hard disk and prompt you if it is ok to copy the Microsoft TCP/IP stack to your hard disk. It prompts you about copying the freeware programs also. You run this diskette program from Windows for Workgroups by selecting Run from the File menu and typing a:\install, then selecting OK. When this program completes, you may configure your machine as described in “Installing and Configuring Windows for Workgroups TCP/IP Stack.”
The Telnet program must be installed before use. The pathname for the install program is c:\samba\telnet\install.exe. This program will prompt you for the place to install and it will make the icon for you.
The FTP program is ready to run, but you do need to set up an icon for it in some group if you wish it to appear on the desktop. If you copy all the files in the ftp directory elsewhere, say to c:\ftp, then you may delete the whole samba directory when all is installed and tested. The pathname to use in setting up the icon for the program would then be c:\ftp\WS_ftp.exe.
