JUBILEE FUN DAY

What a wonderful day it was – thanks to YOU!

When you look back at this summer, wasn't it amazing that we had such a good day for the Jubilee? Lots of people commented that it was so good to have a big Wrenthorpe event, which hasn't happened since the previous Jubilee. Of course, it only happened because of the dedication of lots of volunteers, and we owe a big thank you to all of them. Young and old, all turned out together to make it a day for the village to remember. From the picnic on the car park to the funfair on the field everything seemed to go well. The Association would like to thank all those who helped in any way:all the stall holders, the caterers,Silhouette majorettes,Zumba, folk dancers, singers, entertainers and tug-of-war teams; the Pot Oil pub, organisers, volunteers and people who lent tents. We were so lucky to be able to welcome Frances Wood straight from “The Voice”. She was kept very busy, posing for photographs with many of the attractions. A special thank you to those who turned out on the Sunday in the unrelenting rain and very early on Mondayto help set up and prepare. Thanks also to WRENS who made the interesting Wrenthorpe Jubilee mural which will stay up in the Village Hall for some time. All in all the Fun Day was a great team effort and a lovely day forour community.

BASIC PEDICURE

A fantastic service for the elderly and all who find it difficult to cut toenails and remove hard skin. Kate is offering a basic pedicure (toe nails trimmed and filed; hard skin removed; mini massage and moisturise) all for £6, every Thursday, 9am-12pm at Valley Crescent Community Centre. No appointment necessary at present but a cup of tea is available should you have to wait. Please do not attend if you have any form of skin or nail infection. Please ask about home visits for nail painting and all beauty treatments.

WAKEFIELD COUNCIL HAS GRABBED OUR GREEN BELT!

In June, the Government Inspector published her final report on the Council's Local Development Framework. The result is very disappointing. It concludes that the Council is justified in allowing future housing development on all the Wrenthorpe Green Belt sites apart from the one between Bradford Road and Trough Well Lane, which has been kept in Green Belt. In addition a further site at the top of Wrenthorpe Lane has been allowed to be taken out of Green Belt because it's in between two of the housing sites! The Joint Wrens/WCA Committee is currently considering whether there's anything more we can do to stop the grab.

LUNCH CLUB TO CLOSE

It's sad to note that Wrenthorpe Activity Group, the lunch club with activities for the elderly held every Monday at Valley Crescent Centre, has had to close through lack of support. Many thanks to James and Jackie for keeping it going for the past 12 years.

WRENS – FORTHCOMING ACTIVITIES

October 13, 10am – 12pm : Bulb Planting on Queens Drive – Meet at the junction of Queens Drive and Wrenthorpe Lane.

November 10, 10am – 12pm : Litter Pick along Lindale Lane – Meet at either end of Lindale Lane, beyond the houses, either in Wrenthorpe or Kirkhamgate. Meet in the middle for refreshments.

Luckily it was a fine afternoon which added to the 14 teams' enjoyment on a challenging Wrenthorpe Environmental Society's recent Camera Scavenger Hunt. 4 teams scored full marks and a tie breaker resulted in cash prizes for the three winners. These were presented by Gloria Lowry, Chairwoman to Moshie Monsters, 3 and a Dog and B.B.'s. She thanked all those who took part and WRENS committee, particularly Liz Firth who had devised the hunt, 15 year old Charlie Lazenby who sold cakes and volunteers for all their hard work.

Already the committee are planning lots of exciting events for 2013. For further information please contact Secretary Colin Firth on 01924 781546 and keep watching the web site

UPDATE ON THE NEW WHEEL PUB

The future of the New Wheel is still in question. Punch, the pub company that own it are in the process of agreeing the sale to Tesco. Tesco are still preparing their planning application but we expect it to be submitted in the near future. Please keep an eye out in for the planning notices which are usually attached to lamp posts or for the notices in the Wakefield Express. We hope that we can rely on people to voice any objections that they may have in writing to the planning department at the council. Otherwise this development WILL go ahead.

The people who attended the public meeting in The Village Hall in March overwhelmingly thought that the pub should not be turned into a supermarket. Many thanks to all who filled in and returned the yellow survey forms sent out with the last edition of Wrenthorpe Matters. There was a good response with 387 being returned out of about 3000 delivered. Only 31 thought there was a need for a supermarket in Wrenthorpe and only 21 thought the best site for a supermarket was The New Wheel. 218 said they thought that keeping our local pub was more important. There were some interesting alternatives sites suggested but 73 said ‘Not Wrenthorpe’.

The traffic and road safety problems from a supermarket on The New Wheel site are the major objection. If any one has any evidence of a local store (without a petrol station) causing disruption to traffic and/or pedestrians then please contact Sally at the New Wheel pub. Either call in or ring on 374557.
