LREDA Board Member Job Description

Position:Continental Events

Term: 3 years

General Time Commitments:

In-person meetings

  • October, prior to Fall Con (2-3 days)
  • March/April, location TBA (3 ½ days)
  • June, prior to GA (2 days)

Video conference calls monthly in between face-to-face meetings

Board members are encouraged to participate in GA and Fall Con following the meetings (LREDA representation for some portfolios)

General Board Position Responsibilities/Opportunities:

  • Affirm, support, and advocate for LREDA mission and goals
  • Be familiar with and follow the bylaws and Policies/Guidelines of the organization
  • Attend and participate in collaborative, consensus building-based Board meetings
  • Provide monthly reports in conjunction with meetings, and submit newsletter articles as assigned or requested
  • Serve as the liaison to LREDA committees, working groups, special projects and/or related UUA groups in portfolio area
  • Help monitor LREDA listserv for potential Board issues
  • Maintain attention to the ongoing work of Anti-racism/Anti-Oppression/Multiculturalism, within the Board and the organization as a whole, and monitor for inclusiveness
  • Request reimbursements in a timely manner (complete policy available)

Position Goals:

1. Develop an increased understanding of the trends and desired education needs of religious educators in order to provide meaningful conference subjects.

2. Work within the budget of LREDA when offering a program for members.

3. Work with the other members of the LREDA Board to deliver professional programs that appeal to a wide diversity of needs for religious educators.

Specific Position Tasks and Timeline:

1. Serve as liaison/chair to the Sophia Lyon Fahs Lecture working groupand the Fall Conference Planning working group.

2. Fall Conference Program

With input from Fall Conference Planning working group, LREDA Board, membership and through conference evaluations, develop program for annual Fall Conference, preferably with 2 and 3 year advance planning

With the LREDA Fall Conference Planning Committee:

  • Work collaboratively with LREDA Administrator and Conference Planner on logistics and site planning
  • Invite and confirm theme speaker(s) and program presenters as applicable. With Treasurer, negotiate and develop contract and ensure payment of letters of agreement.
  • Work with local LREDA chapter(s) in creating system to support ingathering worship, optional and self care activities and site activities during conference
  • Work with the Board, LREDA membership, UUA staff, LREDA Large and others (UUSC and theological schools etc) to meet program expectations for professional interest groups, chapters and members at fall conference
  • With Administrator, develop information mailer and registration as well as flyers and other promotional materials.
  • Select and work with a Bookstore Manager for LREDA Fall Conference
  • Work collaboratively with LREDA Treasurer to ensure fall conference budget is prepared and both income and contracts/disbursements appropriately paid/ allocated
  • Send or hand deliver appropriate notes of appreciation to Fall Conference presenters
  • With LREDA Board, determine Odyssey presenter for Fall Conference, invite candidate and arrange their accommodation and thank you gift.
  • Work with LREDA Integrity team to ensure Fall Conference meets or exceeds standards of inclusively, anti racism and anti-oppression and welcome.
  • Work with Trustee holding Professional Support Portfolio to invite chaplains for Fall Conference.
  • Develop and host a first-timers event at Fall Conference and act as emcee at Fall Conference.

3. Plan, coordinate, and arrange for LREDA activities at General Assembly

  • Solicit and choose, with Board approval, the topic(s) of the LREDA workshop(s) and any other workshop, be contact for the presenter(s).
  • With the President, arrange time of the pre-GA Board meeting.
  • With the Vice-President, plan for Professional Day, LREDA luncheon and annual meeting, including arranging meeting space, program, and banquet arrangements.
  • Reserve space for the LREDA booth; coordinate with person in charge of the booth to put it up and take it down. When possible, collaborate with other professional organizations.
  • Be LREDA’s contact person with the UUA GA office. Prepare and submit request forms, keep in good communications, and arrange payments with the LREDA Treasurer.
  • Recruit volunteer staffing for GA events as needed.
  • Be responsible for GA publicity.
  • Work with the Sophia Lyon Fahs Lecture working group.
  • Present a progress report at meetings of the Board.
  • Work with the LREDA treasurer to track GA expenses.
