OF JOINT POLICING SUB COMMITTEE MEETING

HELD ON MONDAY, 21ST JULY 2008 AT 11.00 A.M

  1. Minutes of meeting held on 21st April 2008

Order: Noted. Cllr. Tom Brabazon, Cathaoirleach welcomed Diarmud McHugh to the meeting. Diarmud will be the community representative on the Joint Policing Sub Committee.

  1. Presentation on Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOS)

Order: The Gardaí gave a presentation on Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOS) and how they are operating in the North Central Area.

  1. Update on meetings of the Safer Clongriffin and Safer Darndale Fora

Order: Jim Kelly updated the Committee with an overview of issues raised to date at the Safer Clongriffin and Safer Darndale Fora. It was reported that the meetings had been positive with good engagement and a good attendance, and were action orientated.

  1. Presentation on Traffic Management from a Garda perspective – Enforcement of Road Traffic Law

Order: A presentation was given by the Gardaí on traffic management and the enforcement of Road Traffic law. The presentation focused on issues in relation to road safety for all road users, road safety education, enforcement of drink driving laws, speeding, enforcement of HGVs, procedures for dealing with major incidents, Operation Artery, illegal parking and modified vehicles.

  1. Letter from Bunratty Road Tenants Association on CCTV article in Evening Herald 24th April 2008 following the report to JPC sub committee of 21st April

Order: Tom Brabazon read out a letter, which was received from the Bunratty Tenants Association in relation to a newspaper article in the Evening Herald. Jim Kelly circulated a note on the JPC guidelines to members highlighting mechanisms available where sensitive issues are discussed.

The Committee agreed that in future all members should go through the Chairperson of the Committee before releasing sensitive information to media contacts. It was also agreed to write to the Tenants Association stating that the Committee deplored that their name had been released to the media and that a mechanism is now in place to prevent a re-occurrence. North Central Area office will write to the Editor of the Evening Herald outlining the views of the committee.

  1. Motion from Councillor Pat Crimmins “Can the Garda Commissioner please advise how they propose to deal with the gun crime in the North Central Area”.

Order: The Gardaí gave an update as to how gun crime is investigated at national, divisional and local level. It was agreed that the JPC would write to the Minister for Justice regarding the gun licencing laws.

  • HSE - how they co-operate with Gardaí in relation to juveniles
  • Closing times of fast food outlets and the occurrence of public order offences
  • Next meeting to take place on 20th October 2008 at 11am
