Activity 1:

Read the children ‘Granny’s Quilt’ by Penny Ives.
Ask them to try to bring in a special piece of material from home or let them choose from a selection at school. Discuss their reasons for choosing the material, encouraging them to form opinions about their likes and dislikes.
Give each child a piece of cotton stretched onto a frame. All the pieces need to be the same size if they are to be joined together as a class quilt at the end. Using inks or fabric pens/paints let the children create a design on the cotton. This could include their favourite colours, patterns or shapes or it could depict an image. Then let the children add cut pieces of material using Marvin glue or simple stitches to add depth and interest to the design. Buttons, sequins or other such things could be used to embellish the collage. Remove the squares from the frames and build a patch-work possibly incorporating the other pieces of material previously chosen. Although this activity involves quite a lot of additional teacher time the final result is very effective and the children enjoy pointing out their patch on the whole class end result. Maybe there is a sewing Mum, Gran or Dad around who can help sew the patches together.

Activity 2:

Go for a walk outside and collect a selection of natural and man made bits and pieces. Simply let the children stick, staple, sew or split pin the bits onto thick paper or material. Experimentation is the key to this activity. / Examples of actual patchwork
