Aims / For students to continue to develop a range of clinical skills and further develop their professional Nursing practice
Learning outcomes/objectives / Development of competent safe, effective and knowledgeable performance of a range of skills, commensurate with a variety of clinical placements.
Appropriate progress toward achievement of NMC proficiencies for pre-registration nursing education (NMC 2004) in the domains of:

Care delivery

Demonstrate the key skill of numeracy – accurately interpret numerical data and their significance for the safe delivery of care, as applied to drug dosage calculation.
Content / A range of skills teaching to prepare students to care for children and young people in a variety of care settings.
Continuing utilization of the Authentic World software Medication Dosage Calculation package
Clinical practice, assessment and ongoing feedback from mentors to enhance development towards achieving the NMC proficiencies for pre-registration nursing.
Teaching and learning strategies / Lectures, including use of videos and on-line resources where appropriate. Demonstration and practice within skills laboratory.
Use of discussion, role play, problem based learning and skills workshops and use of the Authentic World software Medication Dosage Calculation package.
Learning will occur through observation, and participation in practice under supervision. Ongoing feedback will be given from mentors, following every placement. Support and review of progress will be provided by personal tutors at least once a semester.
Learning support / Students will practice skills within the skills room setting under the supervision of lecturers and in clinical areas under the supervision of mentors.

Assessment tasks / Students will demonstrate evidence of satisfactory completion of NMCProficiencies in the Assessment of Practice Portfolio. Assessment will be undertaken by mentors in the practice environment, via direct observation as required by the NMC’s Standard to support learning and assessment in practice (2006) and by simulation. Opportunities within the university setting (e.g. Authentic world numeracy assessment). Simulation of numeracy skills will require a pass mark of 80% The overall mark for the Portfolio will be recorded as Pass/Refer/Fail.
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / This module comprises teaching related to achievement of NMC proficiencies, clinical practice and assessment of practice. This module will provide the student nurse with the knowledge and expertise to perform skills that are fundamental to children’s nursing in a range of care settings
