THIS IS OUR STORY

The Bicentenary of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade is being commemorated by the National Trust for Scotland throughout 2007.

This is Our Story is based in the west of Scotland. It has three strands:

  1. RESEARCH
  • DISPLAY: A travelling display on Scotland, the slave trade and its abolition uses information from three houses cared for by the National Trust for Scotland: Culzean, Greenbank and Brodick. David Livingstone’s campaign against the East African slave trade is also explored.The display is being shown at NTS places in the west of Scotland.
  • EXCAVATION: A survey and archaeological excavation at CulzeanCountryPark will look for evidence of the freed slave Scipio Kennedy’s home.
  • DAY CONFERENCE: A conference at Pollok House will consider the latest information about Scotland and the slave trade, particularly in the west of Scotland.
  • READINGS: There will be a series of Readings about the slave trade and slavery at NTS places, arranged by NTS and ACTS.
  1. COMMUNITY
  • COMMEMORATION SERVICE: Aninterfaith service to commemorate the slave trade and its abolition is being arranged by Action of Churches Together in Scotland (ACTS) and the National Trust for Scotland – to be held at the David Livingstone Centre.
  • COMMUNITY DAY: A celebration of Scottish and African culture to commemorate the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade will take place at the David Livingstone Centre. All are welcome. Free admission.
  • WORKSHOPS: Local community groups and youth groups are taking part in aseries of workshops. Participants are examining the slave trade and its abolition, and creating their own responses through art, literature, music, film, performance and displays. Based at Pollok House and the David Livingstone Centre.
  1. SCHOOLS
  • Two primary school programmeswill examine the slave trade and its abolition in Scotland, using drama and expressive arts or archaeology and fact-finding. Based at David Livingstone Centre, Pollok House, GreenbankGarden, CulzeanCastle & CountryPark.
