Geometry Syllabus

For the 2017-2018 school year

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome you to Geometry in 2017-2018! The focus of Geometry AB is to build a strong foundation in abstract and logical thinking through the use of deductive and inductive reasoning. A strong foundation in Algebra is necessary for successful completion of this course. We will explore the following topics in Euclidean Space and 3-dimensional solids, as aligned with the Common Core Standards:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will cover the above topics in one year. We will move through the topics at a relatively fast pace, approximately one-two sections per session. Taking notes is mandatory, because it is necessary for the students to have references to do the homework and to prepare for the exams. Homework will be assigned each session, including weekends. Even though Homework only accounts for 20% of the overall grade, I can speak from experience that students who complete daily homework do well on the exams, while the students who don’t take homework seriously do poorly on the exams and fall behind quickly.

Math Binder: 3-ring binder with dividers, paper, and Spiral notebook.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

●Beginning of class: When you come in, please take your seat as quickly as possible. Put your homework and assignment sheet on your desk, and start working on the “warm ups” which will be on the board.

●During the class:

○Stay on task.

○No food allowed

○No talking while teacher is talking

○Cell phones out of sight

(Electronic recording of any kind may not take place during class without the expressed written consent of the teacher)

●End of class: I will dismiss you one row at a time after the bell rings. We will begin our end-of-class routine about five minutes before the end of class.

The overall goal of the CHAMPs classroom management system is to develop an instructional structure in which students are responsible, motivated, and highly engaged in the specific task at hand.More particularly, the teacher's goal is to teach students directly how to be successful in specific class situations.

BEHAVIOR AND CONSEQUENCES

Consequences for not following class and school behavior expectations include:

●I. Reminder of classroom expectations, deduction of participation points, moving seats.

●II. Behavior log on “Q” and call to parents/guardian.

●III. Referral to counselor and parent conference.

●IV. Referral to Assistant Principal, detention, and other consequences per school policy.

ATTENDANCE/TARDIES:

If you miss a day:

Materials from class will be updated weekly on my page at If you are absent, please use these material to catch up and see what we did in class. Turn in homework the next class. If you miss a test or formal quiz it is your responsibility to make it up within a week. (If you don’t, you will get a zero on the test.)

If you are tardy to class:

Please avoid being tardy; It is disruptive to everyone in class. If you are late, please sign the tardy sheet. Every three unexcused tardy will result in an email notification to parents/guardians.

GRADING POLICY:

(40% - Assessment) – Almost half of your grade in Geometry is from exams. These are the major tests at the end of the chapters, projects, and presentations. One Midterm and one Final will be given each semester, and they are weighted twice as much as regular chapter tests. It is safe to say that in order to succeed in this class, students must do well on these summative assessments.

(20% - Quiz) – One-fifth of your grade in Geometry is from quizzes and other informal assessments. These are not formal exams, but they are short and quick check of understanding. They include weekly quizzes, pop quizzes, and Common Core Performance Tasks.

(20% - Homework) – Homework is assigned during each session and is checked the following session. The homework is graded on a 10-point scale: up to 5 for completion, and up to 5 for accuracy. Extra points can be earned from bonus questions and neatness (see Handout Amalgam, available next class). Late homework can be turned in for partial credits (see Handout Amalgam, available next class). If a student has an excused absence, he or she will turn in the homework on the following day.

(10% - Classwork/Participation) – This grade is based on two components: 1.) The Daily warm up Questions, and 2.) Behavior. Warm up Questions serve as 2-point daily bell work; it is a great practice to review what was taught the previous day. These points are deducted if a student causes behavior issues or violates school policies. Students who are tardy will not be able to turn-in the warmup Question, resulting in a zero. Absent students will be excused from the warmup Question grade for that day.

(10% - Final) – The semester final exam is 10% of the overall grade.

Final grade will be given as follows:

90% - 100% A

80% - 89%B

70% - 79%C

60% - 69% D

Below 60%F

“Q OR PARENT CONNECTION APP”

The online system “Q” is the main computer gateway for students and parents/guardians. I highly recommend the students and the parents/guardians to check Q on a daily basis. Not only can you see the student’s most current grade, you can also see homework assignments and upcoming exam dates.

HOMEWORK:

Will be assigned daily and is due at the beginning of class the next day
All work must be shown
Circle or highlight your answers
Will be graded as followed:

5 points if all of the assignment is complete

4 points if up to ¾ of the assignment is complete

3 points if ½ of the assignment is complete

2 point if less than ½ of the assignment is complete

Late work is accepted for ½ credit, as long as we are still in that chapter

In Closing

The Syllabus may seem intimidating and overwhelming; however, if the student follows class and school policies, strives to do the best in studies, and be an outstanding citizen of the school and the society, he or she will have absolutely no trouble in my Geometry class.
