EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMS POLICY

CRITERIA FOR PROGRAMS

For an extracurricular program to be continued or to institute a new program, the program must:

  1. Contribute to the following Kentucky Learning Goals:
  • Becoming a self-sufficient individual.
  • Becoming responsible members of a family, work group, or community, including demonstrating effectiveness in community service.
  1. Generate and maintain student interest as well as attract students currently not involved in extracurricular or service projects.
  1. Encourage, enhance, and maintain equity including, but not limited to, a wide range of opportunities for both male and female students.
  1. Have a suitable adult sponsor and have appropriate adult supervision at all times.

All students:

  1. Will follow KHSAA Bylaw 5 Minimum Academic Requirement for participation in competitive events, meetings or practices*.
  2. Failing to meet the minimum eligibility requirements are excluded from participating in competitive events, meetings or practices. If a grade is issued for such an event, an alternative assignment will be provided*.
  3. Failing to meet the minimum academic requirements as set forth by KHSAA Bylaw 5 are also subject to the rules as set forth by the KHSAA for student-athletes to regain eligibility.
  4. Participating in competitive extra or co-curricular activities are subject to and must abide by BCPS drug testing policy.
  5. Must be currently enrolled at North Bullitt High School or feeder schools to NBHS to be eligible to participate in extra or co-curricular events as representatives of North Bullitt High School.

All Coaches and Sponsors:

  1. Will be responsible for insuring that students participating in competitive events, meetings and/or practices meet NBHS academic eligibility requirements prior to inclusion in any coach or sponsor led practice/competition.

* Coaches / Sponsors have direction to set higher, but not lower, standards. Higher standards must be approved by principal or designee.

PROGRAMS CURRENTLY OFFERED

Listed below are the extracurricular programs we currently provide. Additional programs will be approved and instituted based on their ability to meet the criteria listed in the first section of this policy.

Golf – Boys and Girls

Soccer – Boys and Girls

Volleyball – Girls

Basketball – Boys and Girls

Swimming and Diving – Boys and Girls

Wrestling – Boys

Baseball – Boys

Fastpitch Softball – Girls

Tennis – Boys and Girls

Track and Field – Boys and Girls

Archery – Boys and Girls

Bowling – Boys and Girls

Competitive Cheer – Girls

The sports of Football, Wrestling and Baseball are listed as Boys sports. However, KHSAA rules allow for female participants should they choose to participate.

The sport of Competitive Cheer is listed as a Girls sport. However, we could participate in a different division at the KHSAA level should male participants choose to participate.

Male athletes may not participate on the Volleyball team per KHSAA rules.

Addition of Field Hockey (Girls) and Bass Fishing (Boys and Girls) is currently being explored based on the results of the Spring of 2014 Title IX survey. Meeting with prospective student athletes and parents will occur in the Fall of 2014.

Students will be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities if they:

COACHES AND SPONSORS

Each extracurricular activity will be led by an adult coach or sponsor who meets any applicable requirements set in law, or by sponsoring or governing organizations. The coach or sponsor will be responsible for personally supervising or ensuring that all students are supervised by an adult while they are participating in an activity, including practice time and travel time where applicable.

Practices at NBHS may be closed at the discretion of coaches and/or Athletic Director/Principal. At certain times it is important for the athletes to be focused on skill development and during those times it is asked that parents wait outside the practice facility until practice is over.

Coaches will communicate individual team policies with parents and student-athletes prior to the season. If there are questions about the policies of an individual team parents are encouraged to speak to the coach and/or Athletic Director.

PROGRAM EVALUATION

Our extracurricular program will be evaluated via the Athletic Director and Principal/ designee.
