Template of Interview Questions
1. Imagine this hypothetical example:
You are at a public place, a grocery store, for example. You have your one-year old child with you in a stroller. You arrive at the counter till with your groceries only to realize that you have forgotten your wallet in the car. You do not want to cross the street back to the parking lot with the stroller as it would be too time consuming. You decide to have a salesperson look after your child as you rush back to the car. There is a deaf salesperson and a hearing salesperson. Who would you prefer to leave your child with and why?
2. Imagine a second hypothetical example:
You are shopping for a used car from an independent party. You have seen eight cars and have narrowed down your choices to two cars. You like both cars equally well. The owner of the first car, a deaf person, tells you that he has never had an accident in the car but you notice a small dent on the body of the car. The owner of the second car, a hearing person with a foreign accent, tells you that the car does not have leakage problems but you notice oil stains on the garage floor. You realize that both parties may be lying. Either way, the dent and leakage do not deter you from buying either car. Who would you trust enough to buy a car from, the hearing person or the deaf person, and why?
3. Imagine a third hypothetical situation:
You own a small business that has been doing very well lately. You decide that you need an assistant to help you enter data to the computer. This data is confidential. You post a job position in the local newspaper, which clarifies that the job does not require communication with customers but it does require confidentiality. You receive several resumes but two stand out as most suitable for the job. The resumes are almost identical except that one is deaf and the other is hearing. Who would you hire and why?
4. From your own experience, are there any instances in which you encountered a deaf/hearing person and felt uncomfortable? If so, describe the instance. What would you say accounted for this discomfort?
5. What stereotypes do you have of hearing/deaf people? How would you say these stereotypes affect your perception of hearing/deaf people?
6. Do you feel uncomfortable talking to a deaf/hearing stranger? If so, what would you say would account for this discomfort? Name as many factors as you can think of.
7. Describe a relationship where you have developed trust. What characteristics were present in the other person or in the relationship that helped to build trust? What things did you or the other person do specifically to build trust?
8. As you know, this research is about trust issues between deaf and hearing people. Is there anything you would like to say which you feel may be of input to this study?
