Limpsfield Junior School Newsletter
Summer 1 2017
The summer term is always a busy time and this year has been no exception. Sats are always a major event but this is also when we take the children on our famous camping trips. It is also a time when the weather begins to warm up and the sun becomes stronger. Please be aware that at lunchtimes and play times our children are outside. There are shady places on the yards but if it is a sunny day can you please put sun cream on your child and they should bring a hat to school to wear outside.
Sats Test
I am pleased to say that the year 6 children have now completed their Sats tests. As always the children all showed a fantastic attitude during the tests and really tried their hardest. The tests are not easy and it is important to remember that they only provide very limited information about how well a child has done at school. The staff and children at Limpsfield work extremely hard and I always find it disappointing that so much importance is placed on the results of a few tests. At the end of this academic year we will be having our final parents meeting where we hope to give Y6 parents and children the outcomes of these tests but more importantly we will give you your child’s final report.
Camping
During this half term the year 5 children went camping. It is a bit of a tradition at Limpsfield that when we go camping it rains. It was therefore no surprise that sandwiched between glorious sunshine we choose the wettest week of the year so far (don’t be fooled by some of the photos). However, it is also no surprise that the children had a fantastic time and have not stopped talking about it since they came back.
Camping is a whole school effort and I would personally like to thank all the staff at Limpsfield who work as a team to make it happen. Our children are very lucky. I do not know of any other primary school in Sheffield that actually take their children on a proper camping trip. Not only is this a fantastic experience for our children but it also means that we can keep the cost very low and so more children can take part.
Although it is a team effort I am sure that you will join me in thanking Mrs Grayson for all her hard work and effort in organising the trip and then making sure it happens without any problems.
After the half term holiday it will be the turn of the year 6 children and I am sure that they will also have a fantastic time.
When I woke up that day I felt comfortable and warm like I would be at home but when I heard the pitter-pattering of torrential rain bouncing off the tents canvas- the material the tents are made out off- as if the rain was people and the tent was a trampoline I realised and then breathed “today’s the last day of camp!”
Mrs Grayson announced loudly ”Alright chaps, today we’re going to visit the grave of Robin Hood’s trust companion Little John.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My face lit up like the new born sun because I had heard about the place and was so enthusiastic to go right away.

Learning about the Stone Age
As part of their topic the year 3 and year 4 children went on a trip to Cresswell Crags. Cresswell Crags is a limestone gorge where archaeologists have discovered lots of evidence about life during the last ice age. The children were involved in building dens, throwing spears (not at each other), they attempted to make fire and did some cave art as well as visiting one of the many caves that were lived in. The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit which helped bring their topic to life.
Dancing at the Octagon
Some of our Year 5 and Year 6 children were involved in a dance festival at the Octagon at Sheffield University. The children had to perform a choreographed dance in front of an audience and, as you can imagine, they were all a bit scared. However, they did us proud and I would like to thank Miss Brownless for giving up her time to practise with the children.
Mrs Sampson
I am pleased to tell you that during the half term break Miss Brownless will be getting married. I am sure that you will join me in wishing her all the best for her special day. After the holiday she will be returning to school as Mrs Sampson.
Sponsored Run
Today was our sponsored run. At this point in time I don’t know how much money that we have raised but I do know that the children did fantastically well in such hot conditions. The money will be spent on the school yards and I thank you for supporting us in this event.
School Uniform
Can I remind you that in September all children will be expected to wear school uniform. This is a bottle green jumper or cardigan, white polo shirt, dark trousers or skirt, green gingham dress and black shoes, boots or dark trainers. Some parents have asked me about dark leggings for girls and we have decided that these would also be acceptable. Uniform does not have to have the school logo on however if you want to order uniform from school then please do not wait until the last minute. We do have sizes available for your child to try on.
For PE children will also be expected to wear black shorts, white T-shirt and trainers or pumps.
