Project Title:Intramural Program

Project Start Date:May 2007 (Joker Hockey League)

  1. What is the title/focus of your initiative?
  • JO PE Intramural Program
  • Using intramurals (in-school based recreational program) to provide opportunities to further instill the values of the school’s J-Code—Justice Ownership Knowledge Effort Respect Success—and improve the personal social responsibility of the students and staff at JO.
  • Through the promoting, supporting, and modeling of these values, using intramurals as the vehicle, it is my hope that the establishment of a full and complete intramural program would result in the creation of positive and supportive school culture, a strong sense of community between staff and students, and a sense of care through the formation of relationships between the intramural programs participants, spectators, and anyone else involved in the intramural program.
  1. How does your initiative adhere to the following guiding principles:
  1. Authentic (enhances the experiences of others)

  • Opportunities for staff (myself included) and students to develop their leadership skill set through the opportunities this program will provide the school
  • Create a better school climate by encouraging multi-graded interaction through participation in various intramural activities
  • Improve school climate/culture by creating another experience/opportunity for those involved directly/indirectly to develop and further improve their personal and social responsibility
  1. Collaborative (involves meaningful interaction with others)
  • Increased communication and collaboration between my PE Department members, my school staff, administration and the students.
  • Will require support and ad vocation of administration and other staff members
  • Scheduling, utilization of facilities, resources, and time
  • I will be required to illustrate the positive benefits individuals (both staff and students) will gain through the participation in a school wide intramural program
  • Working together with staff to provide opportunities for staff and students to make positive contributions to our school community and culture
  1. Planned (includes, purpose, goals, timeline, resources, evaluation process)
  • Increase awareness/participation in living a healthy lifestyle—the benefits of recreation
  • By having students actively involved in an intramural program I hope this will lead to a decrease inappropriate hallway activity or behavior
  • Seeking funds and resources from the PE Department, my school Administration and PAC
  • Supporting and celebrating positive behaviors by having J-Code All-Stars recognized and having them challenge the JO staff in a friendly in addition to celebrating individual and team success
  1. Efficacious (makes a difference in a relevant and measurable way)
  • Measure its impact/effectiveness by the number of participants and spectators
  • Qualitative measurement—reaction from students, staff and administration in regards to the effectiveness of the intramural program, a change or improvement in school culture, a sense of school community, or an overall improvement in relationships between students, staff and administration
  • Establishing an expectation for students to adhere in order to be able to participate fully in the school’s intramural program, using intramurals as a means to have students be accountable for their actions
  1. Sustainable (endures or improves over time)
  • Last year, ran a ball hockey league in the spring and it was quite successful
  • This year, we have had over 180 participants in our first two events—strong student support and participation
  • Next year hope to have senior PE students and other students take on an ownership role—have intramurals become a student lead/run initiative
  • A review of each activity is conducted by myself and the PE Department (collaboration) to see what went well, what did not work well and how it could be improved in the future
  • Continual examination of the intramural program to see how it can be improved or more effective
  1. Challenging (demonstrates leadership growth or calculated risk taking)
  • Convincing staff and students the value of an intramural program or the need to create a strong sense of community or a positive school culture based in the school’s J-Code
  • Finding the time, resources and funds to run an effective and efficient intramural program
  • Measuring the success (quantifying) of an improved school culture, environment, etc.
  1. Reflective (draws upon Leadership 12 experiences and knowledge)
  • I am placed in a leadership role and the various skills, responsibilities and attributes that accompany a leadership role in my school (communication, planning, relationships, etc.)
  • My own personal growth and development from being an active advocate and supporter of this Authentic Leadership Initiative at my school
  1. Elaborate on the following planning factors of your Leadership Initiative:
  1. Desired Outcomes (your ultimate goal?)
  • Ultimate Goal: the JO PE Intramural Program will result in the formation of a positive school culture and community—one that is built on supportive relationships, energetic school spirit, and the celebration of successes and the process of achieving personal and collaborative success. The intramural program will support students in my school to live an active and healthy lifestyle as well as becoming good moral citizens through their demonstration of the school’s J-Code in and outside of our school boundaries. It is my hope that intramurals will be the catalyst for other school leadership initiatives to further develop and enhance the experience of students and staff—making their time at JO both memorable and rewarding.
  1. Process/Strategies (how will you get there?)
  • Establishing an awareness of the JO PE Intramural Program—educating and promoting the goals and values of the Intramural Program
  • Actively role modeling the desired traits, characteristics and outcomes the intramurals program is trying to develop and uphold.
  • Allowing for students, staff and administrators to play key roles in the development and delivery of the intramural program to improve the overall environment, climate, tone and culture of the school.
  1. Resources Required (What will you need to achieve your goal?)
  • Funds to cover promotional and operational costs such as equipment, trophies, t-shirts and other materials (promotional, administrative) to support the program.
  • Support of staff, students and administration to make the program an effective change agent for school culture
  • Volunteers—students and staff who are willing to invest their time, energy and efforts to ensure that the intramural program is effectively managed, implemented and evaluated
  1. Indicators/Evidence of Success (How will you measure success? Know you have reached your goal?)
  • Student/staff participation in intramural events and activities—10% of school population participating in intramural events
  • Staff and administrators encouraging others to become involved in the intramural program and support the aims of the program—a vehicle to showcase and support the values of the school code of conduct (the J-Code)
  • Visitors (spectators) feel the positive energies and emotions that result from a school wide intramural program that engages its community members
  • Feedback from the students and hearing their stories about the benefits of the intramural program and how it has made a positive difference in their school experience (ultimate evidence of success).
  1. Timeline (what will be done and when?)
  • May 2007—inaugural intramural event (Joker Hockey League—JHL)
  • June 2008—full intramural program established (6-8 leagues over the year), the recognition of intramural champions (championship t-shirts), high levels of sportsmanship (J-Code All-Stars), sense of community (teacher vs. student games)
  • September 2009—attaching attendance (no unexcused absences) to intramural program as a motivator for change in school attendance)
  1. Supervisors Support (what does your sponsor think of the project?)
  • School administration support of intramural program (funding), attends intramural events, encourages members of the school community to become involved
  • Excellent opportunity to bring together a school community and make positive strides towards students’ social responsibility through the vehicle of intramural sports and events
  1. Lesson Learned (what do you hope to gain from this experience?)
  • Process of planning an initiative to implementing a program and its evaluation—research skills, collaboration/interpersonal skills, program design/planning/assessment
  • Further my development and growth as an individual, a teacher, and a leader—skills, attributes, qualities of a leader
  • Insight and confidence to continue my role as an active member within my community and embrace future leadership roles that I may be placed in or called upon to lead.
