Dominican Republic Education Abroad Mentoring Student Leaders Program

SPRING 2016

Dominican Republic

Dates: March 19th – 26th, 2016 (Spring Break)

(Each class will also meet regularly throughout the entire spring 2016 semester. In addition, service learning will be required upon return from the trip.)

Cost: $2,300 (could be as low as $500 out-of-pocket)

($500 scholarship & up to $1,300 campus employment in fall 2015/winter 2016 )

Select One of Two Course Offerings:

Dominican Republic: Literature, Music and Arts: Through an exploration of Dominican literature, music and arts, this course provides students with a sense of the history and culture of this Caribbean country. Students will read a selection of shorts stories and novels by Dominican authors that address topics in their history. The study of Dominican music will highlight the different rhythms native to the country, such as merengue and bachata, with particular emphasis on how these rhythms have evolved over the years. Students will also become familiar with the major artists that have shaped the course of Dominican visual culture, including film.

Will fulfill the Global Awareness and Cultural Understanding Enriched Core Cluster

Race and Difference in the Dominican Republic: This course will examine race as a social structure, using the Dominican Republic as a case study. In addition, we will examine other social structures that "intersect" with race in the lives of Dominicans: colonization, class, gender, and globalization.

May substitute for Foundational Core and/or specific major/minor requirements inSociology and Criminal Justice

Lectures/guided tours by UNIBE faculty in the Dominican Republic will examine the culture and social/ economic inequalities evident in their society.Highlights include: historical tour of Colonial Zone; visit to Garcia Arevalo Pre-Hispanic arts exhibition; trip to Ecological Reserve "Ojos Indigenas"; journey along sugar cane routes; and cigar factory visit.

Experience will conclude with 2-day stay at a resort in Punta Cana. Cultural sensitivity and awareness of life circumstances of those in developing countries will be earned through service learning.

Eligible students: Minimum 2.5 GPA; in good academic and social standing; and able to participate in service learning trip in NJ. Sophomores will receive priority consideration.

Total cost includes: roundtrip airfare from JFK to Santo Domingo; 5 nights at Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in Santo Domingo & 2 days at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana; tours & lectures led by UNIBE faculty; venue entry fees; daily breakfast; service learning trip in Santo Domingo, and NJ upon return.

Applications must be submitted to C.A.R.E.S. in Aquinas Hall, Room 104 with a $300 non-refundable deposit by 12:00 p.m., Friday, December 4th to secure your place. Space is limited!

Personal Funding Opportunities for DREAMS

Students have 2 opportunities to obtain funding to help pay for trip expense:

1.  $500 Scholarship with submittal of a Personal Statement:

(maximum of 3 pages; double spaced; with correct spelling and grammar)

a.  How will the DREAMS Leaders program enhance my academic career?

b.  How will this scholarship assist me in achieving my study abroad goals?

c. Scholarship recipients are expected to assist the Study Abroad Office in promoting DREAMS and study abroad once home. Please discuss your ideas for promotion on campus.

Essays should be submitted as soon as possible electronically to Pat Levins, , but no later than Friday, December 4 to be considered.

2.  Earn up to $1,300 from special DREAMS campus employment grant, starting immediately this fall semester or full-time over Christmas break.

(No financial aid application is required for this grant.)
