ASCENSION THURSDAY

“Know that I am with you ALWAYS until the end of the world”

Saying good bye to someone we love is never easy, especially if we are not going to see them for a long time. Today the Apostles are very sad. They have been with Jesus every day for 3 years. Just 6 weeks ago they were heartbroken and devastated when they saw him die on a cross. They could hardly believe what happened on Easter Sunday – they never thought they would see him again. And now he is leaving them again. Jesus tries to comfort them by saying, “don’t worry, the Holy Spirit is going to come to you and through the Holy Spirit I will be with you always”. It is now the Holy Spirit who will be their guide and strength.

God the Father sent his Son to give His LOVE to the world and now the Son sends the Apostles with the same task – AND THEY ARE NOT ALONE. “Don’t stand staring into the sky, you have a job to do”. Yes, you have to give the message of hope to all the world. “You are the salt of the earth”.In our present circumstances we can be tempted to think that it’s all hopeless. We have become a minority. We only too often hear bad news. We are demoralised by the present scandals. It seems so hopeless. But we are not alone and hopeless. “I am with you always”. St. Paul tells us that we are the body of Christ, that Jesus is the head of our parish, our diocese and the UNIVERSALCHURCH. We cannot possibly fail. “I am with you ALWAYS”.

Thank YouAs always for your generosity to the Little Sisters of the Poor.

And a Real GEM for the BANK HOLIDAY

The Liverpool manager sent scouts out around the world looking for a new striker to replace Peter Crouch and hopefully win Liverpool the title. One of the scouts informs him of a young Iraqi striker who he thinks will turn out to be a true superstar. The Liverpool manager flies to Baghdad to watch him, is suitably impressed, and arranges him to come over to Anfield.

Two weeks later Liverpool are 4-0 down to Man Utd with only 20 minutes left. The manager gives the young Iraqi striker the nod and on he goes. The lad is a sensation; he scores 5 in 20 minutes and wins the game for Liverpool. The fans are delighted, the players and coaches are delighted and the Media love the new star.

When the player comes off the pitch he phones him mum to tell about his first day in English football. “Hello Mum, guess what?” he says, “I played 20 minutes today, we were 4-0 down but I scored 5 and we won!”

“Wonderful!” says his mum, “Let me tell you about my day. Your father got shot in the street, your sister and I were ambushed, beaten up and robbed, your brother has joined a gang of looters and the car was stolen and wrecked while you were having a great time”. The young lad is very upset, “What can I say mum, I’m so sorry!”

“Sorry?” says his mum, “Sorry? It’s all your fault we moved to Liverpool in the first place!”

HAPPY BANK HOLIDAY!
