2. Optimization problem statement for the selection of large representative subsamples from the CSWL
This is a nonlinear programming problem (NLP) with just one real non-negative decision variable - the constant of proportionality, q - with the intermediate variables having to be integers. Given the mathematical properties of the objective function and opportunity set (a continuous function because it is linear, and a compact set, i.e. closed and bounded), the existence of a solution to the problem is guaranteed as long as the set is not empty. To make sure of this we include an appropriate goodness of fit criterion (a minimum p-value that is lower than the value resulting from the best possible fit, i.e. that of a stratified random sample (SR) contained in the CSWL).

/ Constant of proportionality
/ Size of the larger subsample obtained by SR contained in the CSWL. For 2010 the figure is 1%.
/ Size of the population. For 2010 this is 8,747,470.
/ Size of the CSWL. For 2010 this is 349,169.
/ Size of the subsample.
/ Number of pensioners in the subsample for cohort , gender and type of pension .
Trunc[] / Function that returns a number truncated to a specified number of digits. In this case it omits all decimal places.
/ Number of pensioners in the CSWL for cohort , gender and type of pension .
/ Number of pensioners in the population (INSS) for cohort , gender and type of pension .
/ Expected absolute frequency or number of expected pensions for cohort , gender and type of pension .
/ Right tail probability on the chi-squared distribution given a value for the test statistic and degrees of freedom , for the case of type of pension and gender .
/ Minimum p-value to be satisfied by the goodness of fit test prescribed by the researcher. For example, in Table 6 it takes the values 0.8000, 0.9000; 0.9500; 0.9700; 0.9800; 0.9900; 0.9990; 0.9995 and 0.9999.
/ Pearson statistic obtained as in equation [1] for the case of type of pension k and gender j.
/ Degrees of freedom, for the case of type of pension and gender thisisobtained by subtracting 1 from the number of expected regrouped cohorts (with 5 or more elements).
/ Expected absolute frequency of pensions, in each regrouped cohort with 5 or more elements, for cohort , gender and type of pension .
/ Number of pensioners in the subsample in each regrouped cohort with 5 or more elements, for cohort , gender and type of pension .
The requirements imposed on the procedure are satisfied as follows:
a)Expressions (g), (h), (i) and (j) guarantee the first requirement, which is to improve the fit or representativeness with respect to the population under study.
b)Total pension benefits reach a relatively large size given that the objective function involves maximizing the constant of proportionality, expression (a), together with the first part of constraint (b).
c)The subsample is contained in the population of pensioners and also in the CSWL and the values assigned are natural numbers given constraints (b) to (g).
The feasible solution to the optimization problem, which considered that the distribution of the subsample should satisfy the previous requirements, was implemented using a readily available tool: Excel Solver (GRG Nonlinear). This proves that any research team can easily carry out the procedure for selecting large, more representative subsamples from the CSWL. It was later decided to solve the optimization problems using Premium Solver by Frontline Systems©, and the same feasible solutions were obtained in considerably less time.
