Mutton Hill Quilt Show Fee Schedule and Entry Guidelines
Thank you for your consideration in joining us in the Inaugural Mutton Hill Quilt Show, a program of The Summit County Historical Society of Akron, Ohio. It will be held at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron with convenient and free parking available on both show dates – Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2015. The Society will host a Preview Party, “A Salute to Ohio Craft,” on Friday evening, October 16, at 6:00pm in the Rotunda of the Knight Center. The Society will present its Summit Award to artists Don and Lisa Drumm. Admission is $50 per person.
Quilt Exhibitors may register their works for a number of categories. Entrants may submit quilts to be displayed and judged by two recognized quilting authorities. Cash prizes will be awarded to winning entrants. All quilts entered to be judged must be dated January 1, 2012 or later.
A select number of quilts from Quilt National ’15 will be featured at the Mutton Hill Quilt Show along with historic quilts from the permanent collection of the Summit County Historical Society and partner non-profit agencies in the region. Exhibitors may choose to register an historic quilt for display at the show using the same Quilt Exhibit Entry Fees listed below.

All Society members receive free admission to the Perkins Stone Mansion and John Brown House during regular tour hours, advance notice and discounts for events, 10% discount in the Mutton Hill Gift Shop and our newsletter.
*Founding Family memberships are available to individuals with family roots extending 100 years into Summit County History. First year membership includes genealogical research assistance at the $1,000 fee. Future year costs established between donor and Society at other membership categories listed.
Entry Guidelines
- A quilt is defined as a covering or wall hanging with three layers (top, bottom, and center batting) that is quilted through all layers.
- Quilt entries are not juried, and are evaluated only for category placement, prior to judging at the show.
- Quilts must have been made January 1, 2012 or later.
- Exhibitors will receive ONE free admission to the Mutton Hill Quilt Show, regardless of the number of submitted entries. Discounted pre-sale tickets are available for purchase to exhibitors at $8 each.
- Larger quilts may be folded to accommodate display area. The integrity of your quilt will remain intact.
- Quilts may not measure more than 108” wide, on the top side of the quilt.
- Entries must be clean, odor-free, and in excellent condition. Please remove stray threads and any pet hair. Mutton Hill reserves the right to refuse any entry that doesn’t comply.
- Entry fees are non-refundable. Should the exhibitor decide to withdraw, the entry fee will be forfeited.
- Mutton Hill Quilt Show reserves the right to refuse, and assumes no liability for, entries that require special handling. Quilts must be able to be folded and stacked and should not contain fragile embellishments, or special hanging apparatus.
- Entries will be accepted until the limit of 300 quilts is reached.
- Please label the back of your item(s) for drop off or shipment using the tag provided by the Society office once your registration has been completed. All exhibitors will receive a confirmation email and a show kit will be mailed to their home.
- Show kits include the following:
- Numbered identification tag to be pinned to back of quilt
- Free admission pass for use either Saturday or Sunday of the Mutton Hill Quilt Show
- Additional pre-ordered discount tickets
- Instructions for Drop-Off and Shipment
- A schedule of quilt category pick up times for Sunday, October 18th after the show
- Unless entered for exhibit only, all entries will be judged on a competitive system and ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention will be awarded per category at the judges’ discretion. A written evaluation will be returned for each judged item. Special ribbons will also be awarded for Best of Show, Mutton Hill Challenge, Judges' Choices, and Viewers’ Choices. All entries will receive a Mutton Hill Quilt Show participation ribbon.
- Best in Show and Viewer's Choice winners will receive cash prizes in the amount of $500 each.

Quilt Category Definitions
Please read the category definitions carefully to determine which best describes your quilt. Your category choice
should best describe the predominant technique and size of your quilt.
Quilt perimeter is defined as the total number of inches on all sides of the
quilt. Sizedeterminations" [the width of all quilts must be 108" or less]:
Large - Perimeter of quilt is greater than 301" perimeter
Medium - Perimeter of quilt is greater than 216"and less than 300
Small - Perimeter of quilt is less than 216"
Category Definitions
- Pieced – Piecing predominates in more than 50% of the quilt
- Appliquéd – Machine or hand appliqué - please specify which was used
- Mixed Technique – A quilt where a fairly even amount of multiple techniques, not including quilting and trapunto, is used to develop the design of the top
- Miniature quilt - Quilt made of blocks 5"or less & made in small scale to original size quilt
- Pictorial Quilt - Wall hanging of re-created portrait image or a real person, place or thing; pre-printed panels or multiple block images do not qualify for this category
- Art/Innovative Quilt - Original work not using anyone else's pattern or blocks; may include multi-dimensional mixed mediums and/or embellishment are used.
- Heirloom Quilt - A quilt more than 50 years old or older; not for judging.
- Nature/landscape : Quilts that reflect the scenery found in nature, such as land, mountains, oceans, forests, gardens, and deserts. Animals and humans may be included, but should not be the focal point of the piece.
- Modern Quilt - Quilt may feature high contrasting colors, minimalism, improvisational piecing, expansive negative space, and non-traditional layouts.
- Duet Quilt – A quilt that has two persons involved in its completion.
- Group Quilt : A quilt that has more than two persons involved in its completion. Involves all techniques, as well as quilting by a person other than the makers of the top.
- Other - A quilt where one special technique is used to develop the design of the top such as whole cloth, surface design, crazy quilt, cathedral window, hand or machine embroidered.
