ACTIVITIES/ SUPPORT ASSISTANT

JOB DESCRIPTION

Hours: 20 hours per week (Monday- Thursday)

Salary: £7.00 per hour

This is a rewarding, fun and varied role which involves supporting adults with an acquired brain injury – our members – to access and engage in daily rehabilitative and therapeutic programmes.

You’ll help arrange members’ social activities, outings and events and help maintain their personal interests, as well as enhance their involvement with family, friends and the local community.

You will prepare and maintain support/activity plans for your designated members and encourage participation in both individual and group activities to ensure that members are fully supported and can progress towards their agreed goals.

As a team player you will display excellent communication skills to ensure current and newly referred members receive a high quality of person centred support.

You will have a positive attitude and be able to provide energy, passion and motivation to those whose lives have been affected by a brain injury (our members).

DAILY ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT

·  Assist in organising and leading a range of group based and individual social, therapeutic and rehabilitative activities and events independently and/or as part of a team.

·  Encourage and assist members during activities by providing an enthusiastic approach to the activities and all aspects of members’ lives.

·  Provide support and care to members ensuring that their choices, dignity, independence and personal safety is at the core of all activities

·  Work with members and external contacts/professionals to implement individual member support plans that reflect the interests and wishes of Members.

·  Ensure support plans are recorded accurately, promptly maintained and regularly reviewed with members and others involved in the care and support of members.

·  Develop effective relationships with service users, families, volunteers and colleagues

CODES OF PRACTICE

·  Work within the National Care Standards Support Services guidelines and the

Care Inspectorate framework.

·  Protect the rights and promote the interests of Headway Members.

·  Establish and maintain mutual trust, respect, safety and confidence of the Headway Members, carers and families.

·  Promote independence of individual Headway Members and protect them as far as possible from the danger of harm.

·  Take professional responsibility for your own work and strive to develop your own knowledge and skills.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

·  Undertake other duties as may be assigned to you from time to time in the general work of the group.

·  Some occasional unpaid work is required to support social events for our members and TOIL will be authorised in accordance with Edinburgh Headway Policy.

All staff should familiarise themselves with Edinburgh Headway Group Staff Handbook including all policies and procedures.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

Previous experience of working with vulnerable adults is desirable. However, a sense of fun, creativity, and the ability to encourage and motivate others are essential. A genuine interest in the people we support is vital.

-  Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.

-  Ability to motivate and support volunteer staff.

-  Liaise effectively with other support agencies and health professionals.

-  Good communication skills.

-  Observe standards of dress appropriate to your role.
