LGBT50 programming suggestions

The BFI is marking 50 years since a major landmark in human rights – the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales – with a number of screenings and events at BFI Southbank, on BFI Player and in cinemas across the UK.

In this document you’ll find suggestions for films that explore LGBT+ culture. These are just ideas, feel free to include in your Pitch Pot proposal any films that explore the following:

·  cinematic representations of LGBT+ culture on screen

·  the experiences of people of LGBT+ communities in Britain

·  the work of LGBT+ filmmakers, actors and creatives

God’s Own Country

Winner of the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017. Captivating and broodingly beautiful,God's Own Countryis the debut feature from writer/director Francis Lee. Bracingly open hearted, this is a thrillingly romantic story set in the heart of rural Yorkshire. Both poignant and moving, this finely crafted British film features a host of standout performances, marking it out as an absolute must see.

Britain on Film: LGBT Britain

Available to book now on DCP, Blu-ray and DVD via ICO

Britain’s LGBT history is the inspiring subject of the ICO’s fourth Britain on Film on Tour programme. With short films spanning 1909 to 1994, this feature-length package documents a century in which homosexuality went from crime to Pride, via decades of profoundly courageous activism, and the shifting attitudes to LGBT people and their rights across the board throughout a time of explosive social change.

Queerama

Premiered at the opening of Sheffield Doc/Fest, Queerama is the anticipated new film from award-winning documentary maker Daisy Asquith, with an exceptional soundtrack from John Grant, Goldfrapp and Hercules & Love Affair. Created from the treasure trove of the BFI archive, the story traverses a century of gay experiences, encompassing persecution and prosecution, injustice, love and desire, identity, secrets, forbidden encounters, sexual liberation and pride.

Please note that although Queerama will screen on BBC4 on 31 July, cinema bookings are still being taken. You can watch a screener of Queerama on Film Hub Wales’ online Previews section.
