PART B: Rationale

1. Statement of major focus and objectives of the course.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will: (1) know the Coordinated School Health Program, (2) apply methodology of Middle/Secondary Health Education, and (3) know and understand the process of writing lesson plans.

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Provide a rationale for mandatory coordinated school health educationK-12.

2. Discuss the issues related to the current health of school-aged children in middle/secondary levels.

3. Discuss children “at-risk” as determined by the six CDC’s Risk Behaviors and the need to build resiliency in these children.

4. Outline a model for comprehensive school health program and explain the eight components.

5. Identify the objectives for children in Healthy People 2010.

6. Identify the roles of the teacher as a model of positive health for middle/secondary levels.

7. Discuss the philosophy and identify the 10 content areas for Health Education and how they fit into the middle/secondary levels.

8. Develop and implement lessons and strategies to teach grades 5-12 children that are age-appropriate and involve active learning, evaluation, and assessment.

9. Utilize instruction aids effectively: printed materials, audio-visual materials and computers.

2. Contribution to the departmental curriculum.

The process of revising the SCHE teaching and non-teaching options highlighted the need for a course about health education methods for middle and secondary schools. HERS 321 is proposed as a companion course to HERS 320, Health Education in the Elementary School, and aims to give students a more rounded and educationally sound background to teaching health in schools than was possible with only one course which concentrated on methodology in elementary schools.

3. Course to be dropped.

No courses would be dropped if this course is approved. This course is part of a revision of the Community Health Education curriculum. The Department has dropped HHP 493 (3 S.H.) and HHP 354 (2 S.H.) and its 74 credit major SCHE – Public Administration

4. Impact of this Course on other Departments, Programs, Majors or Minors.

There is no impact on other majors or minors; it just prepares our Majors better for the middle school and secondary licensure.

FINANCIAL AND STAFFING DATA SHEET

Course or Program HERS 321 – Health Education in the Middle & Secondary Schools

Please answer the following questions completely. Provide supporting data.

1.  Would this course be taught with existing staff or with new/additional staff? If this course would be taught by adjunct faculty, include a rationale.

HERS 321 will be taught by existing staff.

2.  What impact would approval of this course have on current course offerings? Please discuss number of sections of current offerings, dropping of courses, etc.

The HERS Department is revising and renaming two of its majors in School and Community Health (SCHE). They are Health Promotion: Community Health (with a reduction of one credit in this major) and Health Promotion: School Health.

HERS will drop its 74 credit major in SCHE: Public Administration (the revision of the curriculum makes this major redundant because students interested in public administration will be able and advised to take a Public Administration minor).

HERS 321 will be offered once per year and HERS will then schedule its distinct (as opposed to common core) Health Promotion major courses once per year as opposed to each semester.

HERS 431 will only be offered on demand.

Prior to this proposal, HERS dropped two courses – HHP 354 (Principles of Safety (2 S.H., taught once a year)) and HHP 493 (Worksite Health Promotion (3 S.H., taught twice a year).

3.  What effect would approval of this course have on the department budget? Include data to support expenditures for staffing, equipment, supplies, instructional resources, etc.

Approval of HERS 321, the revised SCHE majors and dropping of a HERS SCHE major will allow the department to more efficiently administrates its curricular offerings without additional (or very minimal) cost to the department in terms of equipment, supplies etc.
