College of Humanities Digital Signage Policy

The College of Humanities strives to create an environment that encourages professionalism and academic achievement in the Joseph F. Smith Building (JFSB). To help facilitate this goal, there are a total of 10flat-screen monitors throughout the JFSB—eight on the third and fourth floors, one of the first floor, and one in the basement—designedto display digital advertisements.

Digital signage at the College of Humanities is intended to reduce the quantity of printed signage, provide relevant information to students and faculty, reduce clutter, make signage visually appealing, and ensure adaptability. [KR1]For more information about printed signage, please refer to the JFSB’s poster policy.

Format

Ads must be a standard (4:3) horizontal PowerPoint slide (preferred) or a 1024x768-pixel .jpg with a resolution of at least 72 dpi. Slides will run 6–8 seconds each in a continual rotation.[KR2]

Design

All ads must be created and submitted by the sponsoring organization.

Design tips:

  • Horizontal billboard-style design works best
  • Avoid text-heavy slides; Each slide gets 6–8 seconds[KR3]
  • Font size should be 12 points minimum
  • Sans serif fonts, such as Arial, are easier to read
  • Style formatting:
  • Room numbers—Number before name: e.g. B192JFSB
  • Dates—Weekday, Month, Date: e.g. Thursday, September 1
  • Time—Exclude :00, lowercase and include periods in a.m. and p.m.: e.g. 9:30–11 a.m., 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Submissions

Ads should be sent to [email address].[KR4]

The digital signage administrators reserve the right to change or edit the design or text of an ad; therefore, ads should be submitted in an editable format. If a .jpg is submitted, it may be returned for correction. If after submission you notice a slight change that needs to be made, please contact [email address]. [KR5]

Timeline

Ads must be submitted at least three full business days before their preferred debut on the displays. For example, if an ad needs to start running on Friday, it must be sent in by Thursday. In general, ads will only run for two weeks.

Slides for recurring or ongoing events will only be run for one two-week period per semester or term.

Events Email

Employees and student groups who would like to request that a calendar item be placed on the College of Humanities Weekly Events Email should include this request when the ad is submitted to [email address]. Please include the date, time, location, and description of the event.

Restrictions

Only the College of Humanities or BYU-related events and information will be posted. The ads must not contain any unauthorized use of copyrighted materials or inappropriate language or images.

Editing

The College of Humanities Communications Office will be the key contact for signage. All slides will be reviewed by two editors. Editors may reject or restrict submissions.

Exceptions

Exceptions to this policy may be requested by contacting [email address]. [KR6]

For some large College of Humanities events, the ads may be paused to run event-related information.

[KR1]The Marriott School’s paragraph reads: “Digital signage at the Marriott School is intended to replace all printed signage, such as poster or vinyl lettering, except the following: bulletin board flyers, information table signage, school-sponsored or special event signage, or building closure flyers.” I added some text, but we will want to edit based on our purposes for digital signage.
