COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This class brings students at the intermediate level to a common proficiency by reviewing the grammatical structures and vocabulary acquired from the first year. HISP 32 emphasizes interaction and communication by encouraging students to express, interpret, and negotiate meaning in context. In order to achieve these goals, students will discuss and write about cultural readings on Latin American and Spanish films and videos, converse on topics involving practical vocabulary of daily life, and write compositions. The topics of the course include: family, geography and natural beauty, Latino culture and community in the United States, environmental issues, human rights, art, and the ancient Aztec civilization.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this semester students will:
- develop analytic tools to examine and understand cultural productions from Latin American, Spain, and Latinos in the US.
-improve their confidence in using spoken Spanish in informal and formal situations.
-expand their vocabulary and grammar skills in order to express opinions about a variety of topics and texts (films, paintings, short readings).
-produce an original text in Spanish, using complex grammar structures and accurate vocabulary.
-express their ideas, opinions and beliefs in a clear, concise and persuasive manner in a written and oral form.
-read, analyze, and discuss an original literary work in the target language.

**It is required to bring your textbook to class daily*
PLACEMENT:
HISP20 at Brandeis; a score of 16-31 in the placement exam; or AP exam score of 3.
If you did not take HISP20, you MUST take the placement exam.
Also:
SAT II: 620 or higher fulfills language requirement.
AP scores: (1 or 2 = 20-level course; 3 = 30-level course; 4 = Hisp 105; 5 = Hisp 106)
Important note: Think carefully about your placement: will this course be challenging enough for you? Do you want to major or minor in Hispanic Studies and will you have enough time to do so? Do you want to study abroad? If you think you might not be in the right course, please speak with me as soon as possible. Keep in mind that once you have completed a course in the language sequence (courses number 10 through 108 in Hispanic Studies) you will not be able to skip a level. If the course that is at your level is closed, we advise you to wait a semester and enroll in the right course for you during pre-registration.
Grading: The final grade will be calculated as follows:

COURSE POLICIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
A) attendance: Regular attendance is crucial to the successful attainment of the course objectives. Punctualityis essential. Only an occasional late arrival will be accepted. You may miss up to four classes for reasons of health, job interviews, etc. However, you may not miss any evaluations, compositions, and/or homework. In cases of illness, you must notify me as soon as possible. Missing any part of daily class will be considered a full absence. Beginning with your fifth absence you will bepenalized 1.0 point per absence off your final grade. Frequent tardiness will also have a negative effect upon your class participation grade.
B) homework and class preparation: It is your responsibility to come prepared to class. You are required to read and prepare in advance the pages indicated in the “estudio y tarea para el díasiguiente”section. Also, you must complete all homework indicated in the same section. The activities assigned for the workbook are found on-line at MySpanishLab All homework activities are expected to be completed by the due date. It is suggested that you complete the lab manual exercises for each chapter as a review. In addition, you will be required to complete a series of oral tasks throughout the semester. Further instructions will be posted in LATTE.
C) Make-up policy for missed exams: There will be no make-up quizzes. However, if you have an excuse for missing an exam or composition, you can make uponeoralexam, one written exam, and onecompositionon the last day of classes.
D) class participation: Your grade will be based on the quality and frequency of your participation in Spanish in **all** class activities. There will be several classes dedicated to literary readings of increasing complexity. Readings must be donein advance in order to participate and take full advantage of class time. The reading component will be evaluated by the quality of in-class discussion and written work.
E) writing: You will write two compositions. Both compositions will be written in class.
F) quizzes: (2) Both quizzes will focus on vocabulary and specific grammar points studied in class.
G) exams: (2) Both written exams will assess all language skills emphasized in the course: grammar, listening, reading, and writing.
H) oral exams: (2) The first exam is worth 5 % of your final grade. The second exam will be based on the reading El último sol.The second oral exam will be given during the last two weeks of class, and it is worth 10% of the final grade for this course.
I) final exam: (1) The Final Exam will be a comprehensive evaluation of the material covered during the semester.
The following grading scale will be used:
94-100 = A 74-76 = C
90-93 = A- 70-73 = C-
87-89= B+ 67-69 = D+
84-86 = B 64-66 = D
80-83 = B- 60-63 = D-
77-79 = C+ 59 and below = F
IMPORTANT REMARKS:
*Students who do not earn at least a C- will not be allowed to continue in the language sequence.
spanish major: If you are thinking about majoring or minoring in Spanish, you should familiarize yourself with the program in the Bulletin and then see the Undergraduate Advising Head, Professor Fernando Rosenberg as soon as possible to make sure that you understand the prerequisites and requirements.
C) cell phones and laptops policy:This is a language class, and you need to engage in communicative activities with your classmates. You won’t be able to do so if you are distracted by your cell phone.

D) academic integrity:All students are responsible for following the University guidelines regarding academic honesty:
