Calculus Syllabus

“Calculus is one of the supreme accomplishments of human intellect. This mathematical discipline stems largely from the seventeenth-century investigations of Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Yet some of its ideas date back to the time of Archimedes and originated in cultures as diverse as those of Greece, Egypt, Babylonian, India, China, and Japan. Many of the scientific discoveries that have shaped our civilization during the past three centuries would have been impossible without the use of calculus.”

Assessment

1)Celebrations - We will have several exams each nine weeks. The point value will vary based on the exam. We will have a final exam after Memorial Day.

2)Homework- We will have homework on a daily basis. I will check it based on effort every day. You will be given thirty homework points to start the nine weeks and will lose five points for every missed assignment. We will discuss the assignment at the beginning of each class. ASK QUESTIONS!

3)Review Problems- At the end of each chapter, you will turn in the CHAPTER REVIEWS and AP TEST PREP questions. The CHAPTER REVIEWS will be graded for credit and the AP TEST PREP will be graded for bonus.

4)Trig Reviews- We periodically will review items from Trigonometry. Your binders from last year will be a great help if you still have them.

5)Notebook- I expect you to keep a detailed notebook. It must be in a three-ring binder. It will consist of a notes section, along with individual homework chapters. I will provide you with most of the notebook paper. I expect this notebook to be in chronological order and we will date everything we do. This will be your final project in the class. If you maintain order throughout the year this will be an easy grade. This will be an essential resource for most of you who will be taking Freshman Calculus in college.

6)Projects- We will be doing several projects over the course of the year. They will involve studying the history of calculus and how calculus is in our everyday lives.

7)NOTE THIS IS AN AP CLASS AND YOU CAN TAKE THE AP EXAM IN MAY. IF YOU RECEIVE A PASSING SCORE YOU CAN EARN COLLEGE CREDITS AT MOST COLLEGES. THERE IS A FEE FOR THIS EXAM AND WE WILL DISCUSS THIS AT A LATER DATE.
