Appleby College Senior Two Leadership Positions: 2014-2015
The Appleby College Senior Leadership Program aims to give students with exceptional leadership potential, opportunities to exercise, develop and sharpen their leadership skills in positions of intense responsibility. Leaders are those who have vision and courage, look towards opportunity and challenge and gladly take others with them on their journey. Below are the leadership positions available for S2 students for next year. Please read them carefully and ask questions of those who presently hold the positions or work with those in the positions. All leaders are expected to:
- Work towards the achievement of the school mission and vision at all times
- Be a positive role model at all times
- Follow school rules
- Continually strive to learn and improve in your position throughout the year
- Attend weekly Prefect meetings
- Collaborate with the Prefect team to plan and facilitate school wide events
- Act as a student representative at school and community functions (open houses, fundraising events, appreciation dinners, etc.)
- Communicate & market school events regularly using social media platforms (eg. Twitter)
- Act as honorary student ambassadors (tours for admissions)
- Assist the weekend duty teacher to monitor and track students (on a rotational basis)
- Recognize that failure to represent the school’s mission and vision and uphold all school rules may result in removal of leadership responsibilities and privileges
Prefect Positions
Head Prefect:
- Take on a leadership position for the whole student body
- Be a positive role model for all students
- Work with and interact with students at all grade levels
- Promote and preserve school spirit
- Be open minded, receptive, cooperative and ready to work and build on the previous year
- Work to help students in all grade levels become better leaders and part of the Appleby community
- Work proactively with the student body
- Seek out challenges to become involved more in the school community as the leader of the student body
- Participate in a wide variety of events to ensure exposure and involvement in all grades of the school
- Be an advocate and supporter for school rules
- Liaise with staff, faculty, board and the student body
- Liaise with Assistant Head of School, Co-curriculars
- Facilitate discussion between prefects through regular meetings
- Support and assist all prefects in their role
- Oversee Spirit Day and the leadership conferences run by the Prefects
- Run All-School assemblies
- Represent the school at functions as requested
- Speak at Closing Day ceremonies and other events
Academics Prefect:
- Lead Academic Council
- Work with the Academic Student Reps of each House
- Participate in planning and support of Academic initiatives
- Provide feedback with respect to Academic programs, planning etc.
- Prepare exam workshops and serve as exam mentor
- Organize peer tutor system
- Act as the liaison between the Assistant Head, Academics and student body
- Help organize and run Optimates, Parent Teacher Interviews and Closing Day
- Speak from a student academic perspective at each of the Optimates dinners
- Focus on fostering academic pursuits among the student body
- Plan and organize an academics fundraiser for United Way Week
- Attend school functions as an ambassador of Academics at Appleby
- Be a positive role model and promote all academic initiatives
Arts Prefect:
- Direct liaison between the Director of Arts and the student body.
- Lead the Arts Council meetings and initiatives to help support the arts events throughout the year
- Deliver arts co-curricular presentations at co-curricular assemblies
- Help with arts special events planning throughout the year, especially Arts Week and Appleby’s Got Talent
- Make your artistic mark by devising and delivering new arts initiatives
- Organize Arts socials
- Attend school functions as an ambassador of the Arts at Appleby
- Liaise with prospective arts students
- Maintenance of the Arts bulletin board
Athletics Prefect:
- Direct liaison between the Director of Athletics and the student body
- Lead the Athletic Council meetings and initiatives
- Event planning to help promote athletics including events that help promote school spirit
- Advertise and promote games weekly
- Plan athletic portion of the co-curricular assembly and work with the arts and service prefects to make an exciting and interesting presentation
- Lead planner for athletic banquet
- Be a positive role model within the Athletics program
- Liaise with the Health and Wellness Leaders in the houses to promote athletic activities and events for the boarders
Chapel Prefect - Head Chapel Warden:
- Be creative and energetic in pursuing Chapel goals
- Direct liaison between the Chaplain and the Director of Character Education and the student body
- Lead and encourage Chapel life and worship
- Encourage an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all students in the chapel
- Show a keen interest in matters of inter-faith and traditional worship and spirituality
- Be an advocate for both students and the chapel team in matters of chapel life and spirituality
- Create a respectful and peaceful environment in the chapel all year round
- Develop relationships with students at all grade levels
- Develop public speaking skills
- Take initiative in planning
- Lead a team of chapel wardens and be prepared to listen to their ideas and suggestions
- Meet bi-weekly with Warden team
- Monitor behaviour, dress code and attendance as required
- Work with chapel staff team
- Be available for consultation by students seeking help in planning specific chapel weeks
- Be courageous and not influenced by peer pressure
Community Prefect
- Lead activities, promote action and communicate issues to promote student and community wellness development in three main areas: moral and ethical development; physical and mental health; environmentally sustainable living
- Promote a school culture that is proactive in terms of building moral character, health and wellness, and an ethic of environmental responsibility and sustainability
- Plan and implement student activities that spread the message that ethical, healthy and sustainable living should be an essential goal of every Appleby student – 1 significant event each reporting period, and smaller ones as appropriate (i.e., coordination of a school-wide environmental awareness activity, development of a school wide event that that promotes ethical awareness around an issue, organization of a guest speaker on a health and wellness topic)
- Chair a food council that meets regularly to address issues of healthy eating, nutrition and food choices
- Work and liaise with the other prefects to achieve community wellness goals
- Represent the student body at school and community events
- Liaise with the Assistant Head, Community Life regularly and be the go-between for the student body
- Liaise with the Health and Wellness club, the Sustainability Club, the house Health and Wellness Leaders, and the house Community Service and Sustainability Leaders, to achieve community wellness goals
- Create, with the support of the Assistant Head: Community Life, and distribute the Weekend in Residence emails
International Prefect
- Lead the Global Leadership Council
- Raise awareness about International Service, Round Square, exchanges and other Global Education opportunities in the student body and the school community at large
- Initiate discussion of current international events and how they might be better understood or affected through common action.
- Liaise with other student leaders around the world to share ideas, educational experiences and perspectives
- Help with the “buddy system” for incoming exchange students
- Be involved and a visible leadership presence for the “Global Community” Chapel Week (if applicable), Lunar New Year, Diwali Dinner, Cinqo de Mayo and other international celebrations
- Assist with the International Service Project Fair
- Present relevant information items at assemblies and grade band meetings
- Serve as an advocate for all international students by understanding and voicing the concerns, challenges, and ideas of international students to the greater school community
- Meet with House Intercultural Leaders bi-weekly and House Prefects at least once per term, and other House Council members as needed to ensure that international student concerns are voiced and considered as well as to manage the quality of boarding life
- Collaborate with members of house councils to focus on bridging gaps between local- and international- boarders, and day- and boarding- students.
- Work with the Communications Coordinators on the House Councils to promote events
- Meet with student leaders of other globally-focused clubs in order to discuss issues of culture, diversity and internationalism faced by community and ensure representation of their voices
- Meet at least bi-weekly with the Assistant Head of School, Global Education to plan and debrief
- Meet with faculty in charge of Round Square Council, Diversity Council, International Service, Parent Relations, and Residential Life as needed
- Be an active presence in the Orientation week and ongoing programming for International Students
House Prefect:
- Lead the house community by being a positive role model for students in the house, in the boarding community and in the school
- Promote house spirit, a family atmosphere, high ethical standards, intercultural learning, inclusiveness, trust, cohesiveness and leadership amongst all house members
- Lead the house council, assist with development of agenda for house meetings and deck meetings, run house meetings and oversee all house events
- Ensure that the various house events throughout the year:
- are inclusive and have a valid purpose
- are representative in their totality of academics, service and the arts
- have adequate resource support and media coverage
- have proper collection and accounting of any monies and funds
- Facilitate and organize a variety of learning opportunities for the house throughout the school year including an academic mentor/study buddy regime
- Interact with all students in the house and develop a positive relationship with each boarder
- Act as a liaison between boarding students and house faculty; students and the school; the school and students; the current house and alumni/ae of the house
- Play a leading role in promoting and facilitating the success of the Residential Life Learning Communities (RLCs)
- Promote the development of moral character by being a member of the House Covenant Council
- Promote interaction and positive relations between distant boarders and local students for weekend and special events and be prepared to open your home to international students
- Work to create links to all houses and between boarders and day students
- Show care and consideration for all members of the house and report to house faculty any concerns with regard to the well-being of boarding students
- Help mentor and guide other members of the house council in their roles.
Middle School Prefect:
- Work with Middle School students and School Director to create a vibrant Middle School Community
- Facilitate and lead weekly Middle School council meetings
- Plan, organize, and attend Middle School social events and dances
- Plan and organize Middle School chapel service, fundraising and social events
- Co-ordinate and work with the Middle School Senior one homeformleaders associated with each homeform (including attending their club meetings)
- Attend the 4 Middle School luncheons, one in each of the boarding houses
- Meet with the Middle School Director on a weekly basis to plan and debrief
- Rotate through homeform meetings throughout the year to liaison with Middle School students, Form Advisors, and S1 Leaders
- Help run grade band meetings
- Attend and help organize the orientation for new Middle School students
- Help run the monthly Nightingale Competitions and organize spirit day events in order to promote house spirit for the Middle School community
- Work with the other prefects and student leaders of the school to integrate Middle School students within the greater school community
Senior School Prefect:
- Lead the Senior School council
- Chair the Formal Committee
- Co-Chair the Semi-formal Committee with the Upper School Prefect
- Plan events (semi-formal and formal) for Senior School – occasionally liaise with Upper School Prefect
- Plan and M.C. Leaving Class dinner
- Plan Senior School fundraising events (UW Week, etc.)
- Represent Senior School concerns and serve as an advocate for all Senior students
- Co-ordinate and present at grade band meetings
- Help with Open Houses, Special Events, etc.
- Meet weekly with Senior School Director to plan and debrief
Service Prefect:
- Direct liaison between Director, Service Learning and the student body
- Organize Service Council, chair the council meetings and designate roles within the council
- Chair weekly council meetings
- Helps to promote various service events such as Relay for Life, the United Way Week, the school Walk-a-thon, Spring Forward and Fall In
- Run the service portion of the co-curricular assembly
- Helps Director of Service Learning liaise with other service providers at Appleby
- Lead hand in Service portion of the co-curricular assembly each term
- Liaise with other prefects to promote service initiatives and with the house Community Service and Sustainability Leaders to promote service learning in the boarding community
- Attend middle school service council meetings on a monthly basis
Upper School Prefect:
- Lead upper school council
- Plan dances, social activities, U2 dinner, BBQ
- Co-Chair the Semi-formal Committee with the Senior School Prefect
- Plan fundraisers (Valentine’s day and UW fundraiser)
- Help with grade band meetings
- Work with Upper school students to create a more vibrant Upper school community
- Attend and overseeall Upper School Council meetings
- Be present at Grade Band meetings
- Help to organize and run Upper School fundraisers and dances
- Attend and help organize part of the orientation for new Upper Ones
- Take a leadership role in organizing the Upper School Chapel
- Liaise regularly with the Upper School Director regarding any ideas for improvements or additions to the existing Upper Schoolprogramme.
Senior Leadership Positions:
Chapel Warden:
- Assist the Chaplain and Head Chapel Warden in facilitating Chapel life and worship
- Be part of a team of Wardens who work together to achieve the goals of the Chapel program
- Be a good role model for all students, demonstrating leadership in worship and decorum in the Chapel
- Demonstrate an inclusive and welcoming presence
- Monitor students and assist them in becoming fully engaged in the life and worship of the Chapel
- Undertake practical tasks that assist in the operation of the Chapel
- Be charitable
- Be courageous
- Have a desire to develop public reading and speaking skills
- Be interested in matters of religion and spirituality
Head Student Ambassador:
- Assist in the recruitment, selection and training of Student Ambassadors
- Assist with the planning, organization and execution of Student Ambassador Boot Camp
- Attend Open House events and assist with the supervision of Student Ambassadors at these events
- Be available for weekend and weekday Admission-related events such as Open Houses, SSAT tests, Feeder School Visits, Parent-Teacher Interviews, Curriculum Night, etc. and assist with the supervision of student ambassadors during these events
- Work closely with House Ambassadors and assist with their training
- Accompany Admissions staff to external Admission events when necessary e.g. School Fairs, Our Kids Expos, etc.
- Be available for last minute and urgent tour requests
Argus Yearbook Editor-In-Chief:
- Assist in the recruitment of Argus Club members and choice of Senior Editors
- Be part of a team of dedicated students who work together to design and produce the school yearbook over the course of the year
- Be a good role model for all students, demonstrating leadership in creating and producing pages for the book
- Monitor students and assist them in becoming fully engaged in the development of ideas and eventually the creation of an overall theme and the pages to support that theme
- Undertake practical tasks that assist in the preparation of the yearbook
- Be approachable
- Be assertive, open minded, receptive, cooperative and ready to work and build on the traditions of the Argus that have been passed down since the book began
- Be creative
- Be willing to provide support for the production of the yearbook beyond the club hours
- Share information about and promote awareness of the role of Editor-in-Chief
House Council Positions
Academic Student Rep:
- Be the lead house council member for promoting academic learning, interests, pursuits, and activities in your house and across the boarding community and school
- Be a member of the Academic Council and work with the Academic Prefect to promote academic learning at the school
- In conjunction with the house faculty, develop, institute and monitor a study buddy regimetargeting designated students
- Promote learning in the evenings by assisting with the supervision, monitoring and support of collaborative learning in the school’s designated learning zones
- Undertake to organize and offer at least one academically oriented event for your house per reporting period (e.g. chess tournament, debate tournament, learning session on an interesting topic, house film showing, guest speaker, etc.)
- Work with the Dons to have at least one academically oriented weekend program event per reporting period (e.g. a play, guest speaker, visit to the Science Centre, etc.)
- Support and provide leadership for the Residential Life Learning Communities (RLLCs)
- Be an engaged and team-oriented house council member
- Assist the weekend duty teacher to monitor and track students (on a rotational basis)
- Be honest, open minded, receptive, cooperative and ready to work and build on the traditions of the house that have been passed down
