Purpose

This qualification is designed for people who specialise in providing support for people with epilepsy.

People awarded this national diploma will have attained the level of competence required of them by Epilepsy NZ to conduct all aspects of their professional duties as fully trained Registered Field Officers.

This diploma may be appropriate for people who are involved in working in situations where they have significant interaction with people who have needs for a range of support services for epilepsy and epilepsy related difficulties.

In addition to this support function, holders of this qualification are able to design coping strategies based on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management and which are in accordance with historical and multicultural beliefs. They have the anatomical and physiological knowledge necessary to record and describe the medical history of clients.

This qualification contains common unit standards with, and leads on from, the National Certificate in Community Support (Epilepsy Care) [Ref: 0791].

Special Notes

It is recommended that candidates hold a current first aid certificate or are credited with the first aid unit standards 6400, Manage first aid in emergency situations; 6401, Provide first aid; and 6402, Provide resuscitation level 2.

Previous versions of the qualification

Version 2 was issued following a review resulting from a transfer of standard setting responsibility for this qualification from NZQA to the Community Support Services Industry Training Organisation.

Changes to structure and content

·  Special note with recommended first aid alternatives has been added.

·  Titles of unit standards 7097, 7176 and 7177 have been amended.

People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of the earlier version of this qualification may either complete that version or transfer to this version.

Version 1 of this qualification replaced the National Diploma in Epilepsy Support (Level6) [Ref: 0316]. The last date for the award of the replaced qualification was 31 December 2002.

Quality Management Systems
