Section 1:Hospital Paediatric and Neonatal Services across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
The majority of acute children’s services in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are provided from the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC). A paediatric ward and neonatal unit in the Royal Alexandria Hospital supports acute non-surgical care for children and young people and neonates in the Clyde catchment area of the NHS Board. Neonatal intensive care is provided at the Southern General Maternity Hospital, Princess Royal Maternity and Royal Alexandria Hospital. The RHC is based within the South Glasgow Hospitals campus with the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (including Maternity services) in Govan.
The Royal Hospital for Children
RHC which opened on 10th June 2015 is the largest paediatric teaching hospital in Scotland. It provides care for children resident within the Greater Glasgow area and acts as a tertiary referral centre for children from the West of Scotland and beyond in a range of subspecialties including invasive paediatric cardiac, nephrology and renal transplantation services.
All paediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are provided, including general medical paediatrics, respiratory, endocrinology, gastroenterology and nutrition, haemato-oncology (bone marrow transplant service), neurology, neurosurgery, cranio-facial and maxillofacial surgery, nephrology, cardiology, immunology and infectious disease, dermatology, rheumatology, metabolic medicine, audiology, ophthalmology, ENT surgery, rheumatology and orthopaedics, general paediatric and neonatal surgery, paediatric urology and renal transplant surgery.
The children’s hospital features 244 paediatric beds with a further 12 neonatal beds in the maternity unit next door. The vast majority of the paediatric beds are in single rooms with space for overnight accommodation for parents. The hospital also features a cinema - the Medicinema, Science Centre interactive activity walls (funded by the Yorkhill Children’s Charity), indoor and outdoor play areas and a roof garden.
There are 9 full operating theatres including a dental and endoscopy suit. Four of these theatres are fully integrated for minimally invasive work, a number have laminar flow air hoods for ultra clean surgery and the neurosurgical theatre is equipped for stereotactic surgery. Adjacent to the theatre complex is a day surgery and 23 hour unit supported by a pre-assessment team.
The paediatric radiology department has a full suite of state of the art scanners, nuclear medicine department and 2 interventional theatres with mono and biplanar screening. There are also cardiac & respiratory physiology departments on site.
National services provided from RHSC include:
· Cardiac Surgery and interventional cardiology

· ECLS
· Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia network,
· Vein of Galen assessment and treatment (together with Great Ormond Street as a UK service)
· Paediatric Renal transplantation
· Paediatric Stem Cell transplantation
· Large outpatient, medical day care, medical assessment unit and emergency department
· On site paediatric and neonatal transport/retrieval services

RHC provides the major Undergraduate Paediatric Teaching facility for the University of Glasgow and accommodates the University Departments of Child Health, Child and Family Psychiatry, Medical Genetics, Human Nutrition, Paediatric Pathology, Paediatric Biochemistry and Surgical Paediatrics.
Southern General Maternity
At the start of 2010 the new neonatal unit opened above the labour ward on the Southern General site with projected delivery numbers for the hospital of 5,900 births per year. Because the Ian Donald Fetal Medicine unit is on the same site, a significant proportion of the neonatal workload involves delivery of infants with known congenital anomalies. Being co-located with the RHC allows support direct integration between the paediatric surgical and other specialist teams and fetal medicine and neonatal care. There is physical space for 34 intensive care and high dependency cots and 26 special care cots.
Princess Royal Maternity (PRM)
The PRM is a large maternity unit, situated about 1 mile east of the centre of Glasgow. It is on the campus of Glasgow Royal Infirmary, which provides services for the population of the East and North of Glasgow. It is a purpose built 120 bed maternity hospital, with a capacity for 6,800 deliveries per annum. There are 10 intensive care cots, 23 special care cots and a four bed transitional care unit. All neonatal intensive care can be provided except for those infants who require neonatal surgery and/or extra-corporeal life support services (ECMO). A telemedicine link with the Royal Hospital for Children has been long established allowing live consultation and the transmission of ultrasound images. The University Chair of Obstetrics and Maternal Medicine is based on site and there is an active research philosophy in the unit.
Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH)
The GJNH is located 8 miles west of the city centre along the river Clyde. It contains the West of Scotland Cardiac Centre which provides cardiac surgery and interventional cardiac services to the population of the West of Scotland. It also has some designated National services including the Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service, Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit and Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Service. The adult congenital unit performs over 200 adult congenital operations and catheter interventions per year and is closely integrated with the paediatric congenital cardiac service.

Our junior staff compliment is undergoing review in keeping with the national re-assessment of training numbers across all specialities. We currently have eight national training slots for Paediatric Surgery. There are also two core surgical trainees and nine foundation doctors (FY1). RHC is recognised as a training centre for all years of specialist Paediatric Surgical training. Trainees also rotate to the other Scottish Paediatric Surgical centre in Edinburgh. It is likely that in the next few years the number of trainees may reduce, however, we have agreement in principal that non-training posts could be established which should allow for maintenance of the service. The successful candidate would be expected to formally and informally supervise trainees and participate in their assessment through the ISCP system and at the training programme ARCP. These roles would be clarified by the Training Programme Director after appointment.

The post is full time and based in the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. The successful applicant will function as one of the team of Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeons with elective interest predominantly in Paediatric Urology. He / she will contribute to the delivery of elective paediatric surgery as determined by the needs of the department and join the emergency on-call rota with commitment to be confirmed on appointment by mutual agreement. The Department of Surgical Paediatrics also provides outreach to Lanarkshire and Forth Valley Health Boards. There is an anticipation that the successful applicant will have a significant role in the on-going development of this including the establishment of further outreach to Ayrshire. The successful applicant, following confirmation of experience will also support the delivery of paediatric renal transplantation.
Applicants are required to hold FRCS (Paeds) of the Intercollegiate Board in Paediatric Surgery and be on, or eligible for inclusion in, the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council as a Paediatric Surgeon. Applicants who either possess a CCT or a Specialist Registrar who is within 6 months of the award of a CCT are eligible to apply.
The post holder will have a negotiated job plan. In that regard it should be noted that the job plans of the current Consultants within the Unit include four Programmed Activities to address the substantial out of hours commitment. Responsibilities will include ward rounds, continuing care, administration, teaching, audit and research. The job plan will include 2 outpatient clinics. All day operating sessions will be timetabled regularly and flexibly to achieve approximately 40 all day sessions per year. Outreach sessions will be timetabled for a approximately 20 days per year. This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full time consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication and management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning.
Once the candidate has been appointed more SPA time may be agreed following a formal job plan review for additional activities that are in the interests of the service such as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training that takes place out with direct clinical care, as well as research and/or clinical management duties. These activities must be specifically and clearly identified, agreed with the consultant and by the department and subject to annual review thereafter.
The post holder will take part in an on-call rota for General Paediatric and Neonatal Surgery in conjunction with other consultants (this is under review as stated above). On call duties will be confirmed on appointment.
The post holder will have further responsibilities, in addition to clinical duties detailed in the job plan the nature of these duties will be subject to allocation of appropriate SPA time as above but would be expected to include:
